I don't know who's still around, but I just got news that our own dear Will Hochman passed away yesterday. I have no details.

One of his colleagues is contributing a chapter to an anthology I'm editing, and she just emailed me about Will passing yesterday maybe a half hour ago. I'm friends with Cecilia and Valerie on FB, and Daniel emails me every once in awhile, but I'm not sure that I hear from many others at all.

Thanks for responding, Chris.

Thanks for responding, Sundeep. I'm glad you're still on here.

I just heard from his colleague that he had been ill so took the last semester off, but then suddenly and unexpectedly passed away of a heart attack. It was unrelated to his illness.

Thank you Jim for keeping us informed.

It was Tim who encouraged me to apply to college (I'm 1st generation and didn't know anyone who had done such a thing) and Will backed him up and also gave me encouragement those many years ago. Not sure I would have made the leap without people like them telling me that I could. Now I'm working on a PhD and again have turned to the trusted sages here for advice. I hope to continue to teach even as the profession rapidly changes. I feel so much more of the precariat than in those mid-90s days of the Bananafish list-serv. I'm sorry to hear of the passing of another of our long-time friends and send condolences. Good to know there are a few of us still around. I've made the acquaintance of a few Bananafish in person, and I'm thankful for this thread of connection to my past. I remember making a contribution to a scholarship that had been set up in Tim's name. Jim please do let us know if you hear of anything similar for Will as I would like to participate.

Swimmingly,

Amber

Amber, remember when we met in Chapel Hill? Like at a Starbucks on Franklin Street? For some reason I have a strong memory of you wearing like a neon orange jacket. :) Good times.

I have also met Jim in NYC. I think 15 years ago when I was there promoting my Letters to Salinger book. Sheesh how the years pass, eh Jim-Bob! I seem to remember you with a cool briefcase and trench coat?

Why do I remember people’s clothings? ;)

Chris,

I do remember meeting up in Chapel Hill during my brief stint there (6 months I think I lived in Raleigh) in what must have been 2010 or 2011. I don't recall what I was wearing, but I have a thing for bright orange and don't doubt you in the least. I met Cecilia sometime many years before by the lions of the Art Institute of Chicago. Cecilia if you are here do you remember the year? I think maybe around 2005, but that's just a guess. I know it was sometime 2000-2010 because I was with my ex, but that's a large range. I've chatted with others by phone including one expensive long-distance phone call to Tim in 1996 or 1997 where I promised him I would apply to college. Many fond memories of this group including Scottie, present company, and others I'm forgetting I'm sure.

Swimmingly,
Amber

What an incredible thing to say, Amber. I'm so glad they helped you that way. Architecture? Interesting.

I remember meeting Chris in NYC and sharing a little bit of time with him on a radio show.

Right! I totes forgot that you were on the radio somewhere with me. What a blast. I probably have a cassette of that somewhere, smoldering away into unplayability.

Chris,
From what I remember that was for Radio 4 and I went into the NPR studio at WABE in Atlanta to record it, but I never could find a record of the interview/recording so I've never heard it! If you ever do dig it up and can find a way to get a digital file or physical tape to me I can find a way to play it on my end here.

Jim,
You also have been a voice of reason in this return to academia. I just can't stay away from the teaching. I'm drawn to it like a moth to a flame, despite there being no money or security in it these days. I work with a lot of architects as well as teach many of them in my classes, but my PhD will be in Urban Planning and Public Policy as I try to bring a little of my background in Industrial-Organizational Psychology to bear in the design and management of our cities. I just returned from a conference where in reference to our policy-makers the phrase was uttered "Science is just one constituent."  So true, and yet I still (naively perhaps) believe we could be doing better if only we didn't gorge ourselves on bananas.

Swimmingly,

I hope you go far with that, Amber. We need intelligent people planning our cities. It certainly hasn't seemed to work out that way much in the past...

Chris, where the hell are all those new Salinger books, goddammit.

Hello everybody!

I remember Will, he wouldn't let me read his copy of "Ocean Full of Bowling Balls" because he didn't think Holden would like that.

I still have an old paperback Salinger bio Daniel sent me, I was supposed to forward it on to someone else.  It's obsolete, but I haven't been able to let it go, not sure why.

I'm doing great.  Luckiest person on the planet.  Of course, with good luck comes the bad.

Have a lovely Friday, everyone!

So sorry to hear this. I have fond memories of Will's kindness - Bananafish was my very first venture into the world of the internet when I was in my late teens, and Will and the whole of the list made it a very pleasant and supportive one.

Thanks for letting us know, Jim.

I was so sorry to hear of Will Hochman's passing. Though I never met him or talked to him in person, a kind and thoughtful email response he sent me several years ago hangs above my desk where I see it every day. I had written an odd hybrid piece about my experience writing my master's thesis on Salinger (an author not yet dead!) in the 1970s. My piece took the form of a conversation with a deaf-mute while walking through the streets of NYC. While "For J.D. Salinger -- With Love and Squalor" contained much information, it was not footnoted so I knew would not fly with an academic journal and the subject matter was too esoteric for a general audience. I was aware of Dr. Hochman's letters book so emailed my essay to him on a whim. I was so surprised to get a reply at all and thrilled at one so complimentary. He said that after a "long, tired day in room 305" that my piece "lights up my screen and if you have only me as an audience, know that I'm reading your piece as a very fine and intelligent synthesis of creative writing, literary criticism, and Salinger poetry." He said if it were him he'd try the New Yorker for fun. So I did and was thrilled to get a response -- though it was a rejection, it said the work had "evident merit" and thanked me for submitting. (I'm a journalist and know how rare personal responses to submissions are so hadn't expected to hear anything at all.) It hangs next to my email from Dr. Hochman, whose contact info will remain forever in my Rolodex. RIP.
