Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Below is a thank you letter to Philippine government Education
department, Commission on Higher Education and Philippine Association
of Colleges and Universities for responding quickly to Ban Asbestos
Philippines campaign for them to phase out and ban asbestos in their
campuses and saved millions of students from exposure to asbestos-
containing wire gauzes used in chemistry, biology, and physics class
by high school and college students. The gauze had been in use in
Philippine schools for several decades.

Thank you letter to DEPED, CHED, and PACU
Dear Education Secretary Armin Luistro,
We are a global movement composed of a group of victims, relatives of
victims, workers’ and occupational advocacy groups, health
professionals, concerned individuals, civil societies, labor and trade
unions who have bonded together to vigorously reduce asbestos and
asbestos-related diseases in all continents of the world.
We would like thank you for quickly acting on the petition of the
Associated Labor Unions-Building and Woodworkers International (ALU-
BWI) Ban Asbestos Philippines campaign for the Department of Education
(DEPED) to phase out and ban the use of asbestos-containing wire
gauzes from all classrooms, school laboratories, and campuses after it
was found by ALU-BWI to each contain a deadly amount of Chrysotile-
type asbestos.
We commend your memorandum to all DEPED regional offices in the
country which in effect saved millions of students, teachers, non-
teaching personnel, families and communities from possible and further
primary or secondary exposure to the cancer-causing asbestos dusts
emanating from the use and handling of such laboratory equipment.
Nay, your sensitivity to the issue resonates with the international
civil societies and shows to other responsible citizens of the world
how timely and responsible the DEPED is when the Philippine government
was confronted with such critical issues involving the health and well-
being of Filipino school children and teachers.
Thank you very much.
Yours,
1.Gerard R. Seno, ALU National Vice President and Project Coordinator
