Govindan Aashaan, Kumari Kasthuri, Tharakan and Bheemarajan reach a village as part of their street circus troupe but their main performer Sankunni reach there only later. Sankunni sees Savithrikutty and fall in love but Evil Landlord Prathapa Varma has an eye on Savithrikutty. Sankunni asks Savithrikutty not to surrender before Prathapa Varma. He asked Savithri to come along with him. But Savithri did not agree with this. Prathapa Varma's people beat Govindan Aashaan and others. So they decided to go to some other place. Sankunni saw Savithri Kutty and asked her to come along with him to some other place. Prathapa Varma's people beat Sankunni and kidnaps Savithrikutty. Sankunni reached Prathapa Varma's house and tried to kill Prathapa Varma. At last he took Savithri Kutty along with him.
Vishnulokam was the debut film of Dileep who worked as assistant director. Initially, producer G. Suresh Kumar's wife and actress Menaka was decided in the role of Savithri and had 20 days work charted, but she opted out due to difficulty in managing her baby daughter (Revathy) and work at the same time. Later, Shanthi Krishna was cast in the role.[4]
This was the first movie in which actor Dileep joined as an assistant director to Kamal. Kamal mentioned in an online program that since the movie had maximum night shoots, it was Dileep who used to keep the film unit entertained after dinner with his mimicry.
The music was composed by Raveendran and the lyrics were written by Kaithapram Damodaran. A version of the famous Mukesh song "Awaara Hoon", composed by Shankar Jaikishan and written by Hasrat Jaipuri was also used in the film. This version was crooned by actor Mohanlal. The songs "Mindaathathenthe" and "Kasthoori Ente Kasthoori" is quite popular still today among Kerala audiences.
"One day after dubbing, I was sleeping in the hotel room when I got a call. It must have been around 12.30. The voice on the other side of the phone is Mohanlal's. A few of us are here in Woodlands, can you come here, Lal asked. I went there. It was Suresh Kumar who opened the door of the room. I found something is off. Suresh's face is flushed and in anger. Lal is lying on the bed. Priyadarshan, actor Murali, Lal's friend Sanal Kumar and TA Razaq are there. There is a sign that something happened there. Suresh and Sanal were making films together under the name Revathi Kalamandir. It is clear that there has been some talk".
"Lal aksed me if I can urgently do a film for Suresh Kumar. I was amazed. Lal said there was a big fight between him and Suresh. It has been a long time since Mohanlal did a film for Suresh. They are playmates. After the fight, they took a decision to make a film with me as director. 'Vishnulokam' is the project that was conceived after that," Kamal said.
