Hello Members,

I trust that you are all doing very well. I currently graduated from college - Ashesi University and I am now part of a group of passionate social entrepreneurs interested in starting a venture using bamboo as homes to serve as an alternative in creating sustainable affordable housing in Ghana and West Africa. Our team is interested in developing an environmentally friendly housing model which can sustain the environment, reduce climate change effect, provide affordable housing for low income families whilst providing employment.

Two major components which we have identified as the key success factors in this venture is the housing design and making use of low cost building materials. Therefore, I will like to know if there is anyone in this forum who will like to be part of this team. There are few low-cost/ sustainable house architects currently in Ghana and we will be very much happy if we can use your expertise to make this a success.

I am looking forward to hear from you soon regarding this request. Thank you and have a good day.

Best,
Isaac Bruce

Isaac,

Just a thought for your consideration:

The fact of being a project for affordable housing with bamboo shouldn't imply a low technology approach and innovation-lacking development. Simple processes could add value to the material and generate employment. I might not have an answer about the right way to follow but, you can figure it out from a local prospective. Try to investigate a bit more on the subject and then elaborated your proposal!

Regards,

Hector

Hey Isaac,

My best wishes for your venture. To create a sustainable and scalable business model, my suggestion would be to standardise housing designs and hence the panels which you can prefabricate in a workshop and assemble them on-site. This way it would be easier to keep a quality check to the end product which is very important for such structures. And the more you standardise the components, the more economic you'll make the structure.

Best wishes,
Akhilesh
