Dear Bamboo Housing Group members,

I am just e-mailing to ask for feedback on the google group format. For the last year or so the group has had very little traffic. I would hope that it could act as a forum for exchange of ideas and collaboration, but at the minute, this does not seem to be happening. There is a plan at INBAR to establish network functions on the main website, with one option being to have a network site for bamboo construction – members would be given an idea and password. I would really appreciate inputs from the members to find out from you, what would be most useful from a networking perspective.

In an unrelated matter, at the minute, ISO 22157-1 Bamboo — Determination of physical and mechanical properties —Part 1: Requirements is open for a systematic review at ISO. INBAR will provide comments on the standard before the 16th December. As many of you on this group are designers working with bamboo, I would be interested to hear feedback from you on the standard. It would be interesting to hear from you on whether you are using this standard in your work/ the standards are being referenced or used in your country, as well as what suggested recommendations you might have.

Best Wishes and look forward to hearing from you shortly,

Dear Oliver, your proposal for a move from our actual group format to INBAR's website has my support. Evidently this is not the solution for the "little traffic" ; that depends on the members. Maybe your second question about ISO 22157 might raise a lot of recommendations. That should be great! Best regards, Jules Janssen.

Dear Oliver, I cannot agree more with Jules, the fact of opening a forum directly on INBAR's page might not change anything. Even more when there are plenty of similar networks and everyone sends you something different in a regular basis. There are professional networks like LinkedIn that integrate more areas and reach out more people.

Dear Oliver,

Although I have some comments regarding the ISO 22157-1, I think that with the aim of fostering the development of engineered bamboo products, more focus need to be put on standards for laminated and panellized products. I'm probably speaking from my own experience but, always when I need to characterize the mechanical properties of flat bamboo specimens (for panels/laminates) I use the European standards (say, Small clear specimens BS 373:1957, BS EN 319:1993, BS EN 789:2004, BS EN 408:2010, etc) and adapt them to the specific situation.

Anyway, regarding the ISO 22175-1, I could just comment on the range of results taken for the determination of the MOE (9.62, between 20% and 80%) which for timber is between 10% and 40% and might lead to lower values for MOE.

On the other hand, it would be useful to include in it characteristic values for the different properties in tension, compression and shear for specific species.

Hope this is of help.

Regards,

Hector

Dear Hector,

thanks for this feedback on ISO 22157-1. We are definitely aware of the need to do more on engineered bamboo structural product standards too. The new working group 12 we hoped to have up and running within ISO TC 165 soon will almost certainly start to look at products already out there commercially. We will continue to work with round pole as well though - as both have there place and importance.

I would really welcome feedback from other members of the group on this issue. Voting for the systematic review of 22157-1 closes on the 16th December, so please sen me your inputs.

Best Wishes,
