Greta has proposed via email:

"What about meeting on Thursday evenings?"

I can check on that. My wife is a musician and traditionally
rehearses on Thursday nights... but that may be subject to change.

I can check with her to see what way things are going with that.

Can't do this Thursday, though.  Let's set something up a week or two in advance.  Of course next Thursday's out.

Happy Thanksgiving.

@william - why are thursdays out?

3 days is definitely not enough advanced notice for me, so if you make plans that quick it will be hit or miss for me.  This Friday wouldn't work... nor would Fridays in general.

How about Thursday, Dec 3rd.  Maybe we can make it the 1st Thursday of the month?

Also, I know you are really excited to meet william - but even if we can't right away, feel free to start up a conversation here, or ask questions if you are running into problems with joomla.

We don't have to meet in person to start talking and helping each other out...

thursdays are not out i just saw that everyones schedule conflicted except friday so i threw a date out there to see what everyone thought to get the ball rolling.  your right we dont have to meet in person but things get misinturpreted through email just like a forum, thats why i wanted to start this JUG to have people come together to discuss their issues face to face so you can see what peoples frustrations are what their concerns are and the like.

My biggest problem is that I tried to teach myself Joomla using tutorials from Joomla.org.  I got stuck and gave up.  So I am totally a Newbie.

Some of my prospects and clients have asked me about buillding web sites where they can make their own updates, so I started looking into a CMS solution and came across Joomla.

Do you mean you had troubles getting Joomla! installed and running for a client?  Or do you mean you had trouble with custom coding/component development?

only reason i ask is that if you are using godaddy they will put it on for you but some of the components im trying to use like community builder require a program called ioncube that i am not sure how to install and godaddy does not give a good tutorial on it

Geh.  Ioncube.

It' an encoder.  The developers of the component don't want to you see their code, so they encode it with ioncube.  Then, you need to run ioncube on your server to run them.

Not really in the spirit of open source, but that's what it is.

Have you guys looked at pair.com?  I have been using them for my own projects for the past 6 years or so and am really happy with them.  They aren't real hand-holdy, but their support has been stellar, and there uptime is really good.

They have shared hosting packages that are reasonable, and you have a lot of freedom.  You can install your own version of PHP if you want, for example.

i have uploaded it to the server and in the joomla file folder that was created.  what i can not find is the php5.ini file bc i have to change the [zend] code and change it.  i can not find any .ini files on there, it also said to create it and i did but not sure if it is in the correct location.  i put one in the server and in the joomla folder like ioncube.  i am trying to set up a joomla website that is subscription based so people can watch all of my video tutorials but am having a problem with which module to use for the front page for the subscription aspect

Yeah, if they have cURL and ioncube, then you should be golden as far as that goes.

Is the problem that community builder extensions aren't working for you?  Or are you just making sure you have all the requirements before you install?

Can you link us to the url of the extensions you are working with?  in the joomla extensions directory, or on the company's site itself.  It would be cool to see what you are playing with.

I use GoDaddy and have had no complaints.  I have heard a lot of negative comments about them, but they've always given me excellent customer service.  I am a GoDaddy domain name and hosting reseller so that's who I usually persuade my clients to sign up with.  They are in a partnership with Google so that is a big plus for webmaster tools. One thing I admit that I don't like, though, is that they don't give out a toll-free number.

I may be able to help with that toll-free number too.

I am using OneBox.com. I have their Unified Messaging plan. It's 13.00 a
month and it's basicly an 800 number with voicemail where customers can
call and leave messages. With this plan the number doesn't actually ring
anywhere, it's strictly voicemail only. But they do have plans that
offer call forwarding to any number so that the 800 number will ring at
any number you want.

I also recently became aware of voipo.com they offer 800 numbers for
$5.00 per month and you get 100 minutes a month, voicemail, and call
forwarding to any number.

Hope that helps!

those are the two websites that I am currently looking into already put community builder on my website and it was working fine with the tutorial they gave me for free.  Was looking into purchasing either one of the subscription based components but was not sure which one is going to be best for me.  I have read a lot about account expiration control at this website.

http://valanx.org/

the only problem with AEC is that it does not have the longer form that the first two have to collect more information from each customer you have to find another component to do this and integrate it with AEC.  I would rather have once set of programs from one supplier work the functions of signing someone up and taking care of billing so i do not have to send multiple emails talking about integration issues because we all know people love to pass the buck these day lol.  If anyone has used these or have any other recommendations please let me know, thank you.

I'm familiar with Community Builder but not their subscription
extension. I'm also familiar with AEC. In the past (before there even
was a CB subscription extension) I used AEC with CB and they both worked
seamlessly with each other.

Recently, I attempted to create a site using AEC and JomSocial but there
are still a couple of workflow issues to be worked out (by the
developers) - especially when you want to have the payment plans first.
For example, when you have the plans first, you pay for your access,
then you are returned to the site and you are taken to the JS profile
page where you can upload your avatar.

Essentially this is correct since you have paid for your access. But
when you throw in the need for Admin Approval / Review (before account
activation) then things get a little weird and you're still taken to the
upload avatar page - even though you want to review then approve the
profile first. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that the
admin approval plugin is written by a 3rd party JS developer and not the
actual JS development team. Hope that makes sense. If not let me know
and I'll see if I can explain it better.

But I'm 100% positive that if you were not worried about reviewing new
JS accounts before account activation then the workflow issue would not
be a problem.

Oh and soon AEC will no longer be free. They will be charging for access
to download the extension. But to me that says it will only improve the
quality of the extension, because now they will have paying customers to
help support the development work.

yea just happened with AEC they have no more free membership.  Can we make this one of the first topics to cover at the JUG.  How to install and run community builder and AEC on the front page?  Since we are talking about it so much I bet others in the group would like to know what we are talking about and how to use it so that they can use it for their own site.  I think I still have the extension on my computer if i did not delete it, if you have it too that would be great.  Let me know what you think, because I would love to know how these link together I tried using AEC but could not exactly figure how it worked.  CB on the other hand was not too hard.

5.  Best security practices

will be giving it a test run this week. I will be testing it with Joomla
1.5.15, Community Builder 1.2.1, JomSocial 1.5.248, and noixACL 2.0.6 Beta.

that is wonderful I can not wait to hear your reviews on which module works best with AEC,  have you worked with any modules that will incorporate Camtasia videos into a joomla site?

Is there a time and location that everyone has agreed upon?

Maybe setting up a Google calendar and documents feature would be a good
idea for the group. A central place for everything.

Camtasia is the software everyone is using to do screen capture video tutorials about software.  Very easy to use, and very straight forward.  I am not sure if i can embed the code like a picture or if i need a component to put video on my website

William -

If you need to display video on your site, you can just paste the embed code in a content item of course... however, check out the allvideo component.  We recommend it to and use it with all of our clients.  It is pretty stellar.

William - why are you trying to upload code via the media manager?  html, php and I think js files are not allowed.

I'm not clear on why you would upload code via the mm.  You really would want to upload it via FTP, right?

the all videos tutorial says to use the media manager and to add this code to the article {swf}images/videos/firstvideo.swf{/swf}

firstvideo is the title of my movie

It says to use the media manager to do that?  I think you would open the content item in the content item manager and add the allvideo embed code there.

Go Content -> article manager then open the article you want the video to show up in and add that code to it.

It looks like you have the swf tag right...

Can you copy and paste where it says to use the media manager?  Are you sure it isn't saying to upload the .swf file via the media manager? Or is that what is illegal?

Brad

if you scroll down it gives you the file path, and when you download the program in the module itself it states to create folders

images/stories/video
images/stories/audio

so i just assumed everything would be downloaded via the media manager because that is where those file folders are located

Ok apologies if I am breaking this down too far but here is what you need to do...

First, you have to download and install the allvideo extension.

Then, you have upload your swf file to images/stories/video with the media manager.

Then you use the Article Manager to open an article or create a new one.

Then, in that Artivle you place the tag: {swf}images/videos/firstvideo.
swf{/swf}

Then save the article.

When you then look at that article on the front-end, if all is right, you should see the video your video.

Does that make sense?

I'm not 100% sure what file types you're able to upload via the media
manager. But I think it should be just about any type of file. I usually
upload the files via FTP. I never really liked using the media manager.

But once the files are uploaded, you'll need to create a content article
and insert the allvideos "tag" code into it. By "tag" code I am
referring to the {swf}images/videos/firstvideo.swf{/swf}

If you are looking at inserting videos into content articles then
allvideos would be the way to go. But if you're looking at having a
central video gallery then I'd suggest using Seyret. And if you're
concerned about bandwith with your hosting account / service provider at
all, then I'd suggest uploading the video to YouTube (after you create
your own YT account of course). That way when the video is played it's
using YT's bandwidth and not your own.

yes i did that the first time and this is what the site looks like

http://urfranchise.com/joomla/

the video doesnt come up at the bottom as you can see, now when i make it a {flv}images/videos/firstvideo.swf{/flv} it shows the video player but says that the path is wrong which is understandable bc its a diff kind of file than the extension is, but the full player shows but does not show when i put in {swf}images/videos/firstvideo.swf{/swf} as you can see from the link i provided

Good point TP - we use allvideo/youtube for our clients and it is really the way to go.  That way, you don't hog up all your bandwidth and disk space.  Also, in theory, Youtube's servers are optimized for video serving but that's debatable.

We have actually started using blip.tv and vimeo too for different things as well.

And as far as FTP, yeah - that's the way to go.  Google it William, and look at wynscp or filezilla.  Both good FTP clients.

Yeah, without seeing your file structure it's hard to say... but it sounds like the file isn't where you think it is.  When you created images/video, did you just place the video file inside the already existing images directory?  Or did you create a new images dir somewhere?

If you store the files on your server they are not secure either. There
are programs out there that allow you to download every file on a
website - an exact copy of the site if you will. There are programs that
allow you to download SWF and FLV files. Nothing is ever really secure
on the Internet.

If you're worried about theft or copyright infringement, I suggest that
you use a watermark in your video(s) along with a author / copyright
notice or spash page at the beginning and end of the video.

The only directory that you really would have had to create is the VIDEO
directory because /images/stories/ already exists as the default Joomla!
location for all content graphics.

Actually, look at what you have there.  The bit of the module that shows up.  You see "embed"  and a text box with the embed code.

The path it shows there is:

http://urfranchise.com/joomla/images/stories/videos/images/stories/videos/presentation.swf.swf

So, you have something set up wrong somewhere.

ok so you do not need {swf}images/videos/videofirst.swf{/swf} all you need is this

{swf}videofirst{/swf}

i was making it too complicated, the program already has the firl directories set and i just need to change everything to swf from now on, i will be trying this with www.screencast.com as these videos are not that big and also trying to see what the smallest type of video format is to allow the most videos on my server or on screencasts server, thank you for all who helped out
