One last reminder for anyone interested in doing SOBO Ultimate’s spring league which starts on April 1st.
Sign up has been extended but today is the last day. If interested please respond to GWRa...@yahoo.com.
I’m copying the details from the original post below…
Cheers!
_Alan
All,
Due to the great turnout and positive response to the league in the fall, we’re going to bring the SoBo league back again this spring. We’re going to make it a little bit longer this time around (plan is for 7 weeks), but it will still feature all the great ultimate action and free beer from last fall.
Starting April 1st, we'll begin a 7 week league on Wednesday nights in lieu of pickup. Assuming there is enough interest, the league will have 4 teams, and each team will have 1 game per week with the last week reserved for playoffs. We'll play at Latrobe Park as usual. The first game will start around 6:15pm, and the second around 7:45pm. Each team will have an equal number of early games and late games. Each team will have a male and female captain who will draft their respective teams.
Players of all experience levels are encouraged to sign up. Since everyone will be on the same teams from week to week, there will be more opportunity for instruction, and personal improvement. Those who know they will only be able to make a couple of the games (perhaps only the early games or only the late games) are also encouraged to sign up. Just make this known when you register yourself, so the captains can draft accordingly. There will be a $10 fee for the league to cover the fields/lights and post-game beverages at a local watering hole. This can be paid to Adam or me.
If you would like to be a part of the league, please sign up before Wednesday, March, 25. Team size will be limited, so please respond ASAP to reserve a spot. People may be turned away. Please consider being a captain if you've been playing ultimate for a while. It’s not that challenging and you get a free SoBo disc. Note: Baggage requests this year will be limited to 1 person and requires that you can demonstrate a need to be on the same team (or different teams). Send your registration to GWRa...@yahoo.com. Please include the following:
1. First and Last name:
2. Gender:
3. How long playing SoBo Pickup:
4. Height:
5. Availability (i.e. all games, only late games, etc):
6. Interested in being a captain?
7. If you need to be on a team with (or not on a team with) another player, please include his/her name here, and explain your need.
Rate Yourself from 1-5 on the following
Throws: 1-5
1- Just learning 3- Solid forehand and backhand 5- Good hucks and breakmark throws
Athleticism: 1-5
1- I always hated gym class 3- i can hold my own 5- i was a star in highschool
Speed: 1-5
1- Slow 3- Average 5- It’s not possible to overthrow me
Experience: 1-5
1 - I've only played once or twice 3 - Played a lot, but not really competitively 5 - Experienced club or college player
If anyone has comments or suggestions, please include those as well.
Despite all the rain Wednesday is supposed to be warm and sunny.
Ultimate starts ~ 5:00, SE corner of Patterson Park.
For anyone interested in improving their skills we’re going to be hosting some pre-game clinics before our usual Saturday morning 11:00 games. We talked about this last year, finally giving it a try.
This Saturday at 10:15 Matt will lead us in practicing basic throwing skills followed by a simple end zone drill that emphasizes swings, cutting and throwing to a receiver in the zone. Hopefully this will be popular and we can follow up with other clinics in the future.
Just to get a read on the interest level, please e-mail me if you think you’ll make it to the clinic this Saturday.
Thanks
_Alan
PS – for anyone interested in getting a set of cheap practice discs this is a good source:
http://www.sportdiscs.com/misprints.html
These are discs that are rejects for cosmetic reasons but are physically fine. They come in sets of 10. Very handy…
For those of you playing with SOBO Ultimate at all, please see the message from Rob below concerning their fields….

info about Ultimate Fields...Please Read!!!
All,
I spoke with Larry, the director of the Locust Point Rec Center today and I was told that we need to show that we have a large number of Baltimore city residents that use our field. The city parks and rec folks want to make sure that the people using the parks are city taxpayers. Those sport groups that don't have a lot of city resident participants may lose their fields. Needless to say, we don't want that to happen. If you are a city resident, please email me robert...@gmail.com with your name, address, and phone number. I'll put together a list that we can show to the parks and rec people. Thank you for your help!
Rob

Michael Ivan's house - 4410 Roland Springs Dr., Baltimore 21210. Party starts at 6 and goes until whenever. We're providing food stuffs but bring a side, beverage or dessert to share!
That's mostly it.
Call me at (443) 224-8771 if there's any questions
PPS - Next week BSSC begins their annual take over of Patterson Park for their softball league. So, starting next week we will move to the fields directly across Linwood from where we now play. We had good luck there last year.
There were 2 pairs of shoes left behind after Saturday’s game - one NB, one Adidas. I didn’t bring them in today but will bring them this Saturday.

Weather looks iffy today - 80% chance of precip. But for those intrepid souls willing to brave the elements Ultimate starts at 5:15 at Patterson Park, SE corner of Linwood and Eastern.
BSSC softball is scheduled to begin tonight, so the plan was to move our game to the upper grassy fields across the street (on the east side of Linwood). However, they may have a rain out. If so, we can occupy our regular fields just south of the covered ice rink.
-Alan
Ultimate starts at 11:00 tomorrow. BSSC does not run softball on Saturdays, so we’ll be at the usual location in Patterson Park – corner of Eastern and Linwood.
For those interested in practicing their throws and perhaps some drills some of us will be meeting up earlier, around 10:15.
Weather looks like it will be clear but a bit on the hot side, so remember to bring plenty to drink!
Finally, if anyone is looking for something to do this weekend there is an arts festival out in Columbia Fri. - Sun. See attachment if interested…(my wife Sonya will be there with her pottery).
Cheers!
-Alan
Ultimate starts at 5:00 tomorrow. BSSC softball will force us either to the side or across the street, so look around if you don’t see the game!
As usual, bring a dark and light shirt, cleats if you’ve got ‘em and plenty to drink.
Cheers!

Folks, there is some interest in getting a team up for this year’s Wildwood Beach Ultimate tournament which takes place July 24-25 on the beach at Wildwood, New Jersey, just north of Cape May.
Linda and I joined a team last year and it was a lot of fun. Interested? Look over the details below…
The basic game is 4 on 4. The field is smaller and played on sand. There is a stall count which is only 6 seconds long. No cleats, but socks and/or shoes are OK. Barefoot is fine.
For a bit of a feel for the game check out video clips of past games here:
Here is the official Wildwood Beach Ultimate website, including links to rules, location, places to stay, etc:
http://www.wildwoodultimate.com/
Here is a link to more details on beach Ultimate rules:
http://beachultimate.org/4on4rules_short.html
Looks like fun you say? Still interested? If so here’s what you will need to do. One warning, it is not altogether cheap! Read on, MacDuff
While beach Ultimate is a blast, it is definitely more intense than what we are used to at Patterson. Despite the small field, running on the sand in the hot sun playing multiple games all day is TIRING and plenty of subs are a definite necessity. I’d say we would want a roster of AT LEAST 10 people, 2 or 3 being female. There are some different divisions. I believe the less serious teams are in the “Beer League” and we would fall squarely into that category. In fact, it’s entirely likely we’ll lose more games than we win. Within the Beer League there are 2 options, either 3/1 (one girl minimum on field) or 2/2 (2 girl minimum). Which one we choose will depend heavily on how many females we have on our roster.
Costs and other logistics:
To be eligible to play in the tournament each player must:
a) Be a current UPA member (dues paid up) no later than 10 days prior to the event
b) Complete the waiver of liability form (thankfully, this can now be done online).
Link to UPA registration:
http://www.usaultimate.org/resources/sanctioning/registration.aspx
The cost of a year’s UPA membership is $40.00. Payment can be made online using PayPal or a credit card, or via mail by check (if paying by snail mail, bear in mind the 10 day requirement!).
Please note that on-site registration is not an option!
Team registration is $350.00, so obviously the more folks we have on the roster, the less the per-person cost.
Other costs: Where to stay? The options are hotels or camping. Prices vary.
Other other costs: Transportation, food, etc.
Estimated total cost per person: assuming we have a roster with 10 people, a reasonable estimate might be about $200.00 per person for the whole event. This would include UPA membership dues, Lodging Fri & Sat night, food for the weekend and travel expenses. Obviously this figure could go either up or down depending on how Spartan or extravagant you want to be. Sharing rides, hotel rooms/campsites will bring costs down. Unless you can leave very early Saturday morning, I’d strongly advise planning on going up Friday night. We tried leaving early Saturday morning last year and ran into serious traffic which caused us to miss games.
Still interested? Then please let me know, as we need time to complete and submit a team roster (names, e-mail and UPA membership numbers) to UPA and register with Wildwood.
Yours in Discitude,
Alan Meeker

I know it looks grey out right now but according to the current weather forecast it shouldn’t start raining again until ~ 9:00 tonight, so the game is ON!
Ultimate at 5:00 tomorrow. BSSC softball will once again force us either to the side or across the street, so look around if you don’t see the game!
As usual, bring a dark and light shirt and plenty to drink – it’s going to be in the 90s!!
Cheers!
-Alan
Due to the summer heat Saturday morning games will now start at 10:00. No softball on Saturdays, so we’ll play in the usual spot, corner of Linwood and Eastern, in front of the covered ice rink. It is going to be quite hot, so remember to bring plenty of fluids.
Wildwood Beach Ultimate. So far I have only heard back from 2 people who are definitely interested in forming a co-ed team to take to Wildwood (tournament runs July 24 & 25). I know a lot more people expressed interest a while ago. Team registration deadline is this coming Wed., so if we’re going to do this we’ll need more definites (probably need minimum of 10 people, with at least 2-3 of them being female). Let me know if you’re interested!!
For more details check out the official website: http://www.wildwoodultimate.com/
or e-mail me…

Wednesday game starts at 5:00. If softball is being played we'll have to run one field along the side and/or play on the eastern side of Linwood. Hopefully the weather forecasters are correct and it will be a chilly 80 degrees tomorrow!
Wildwood Beach Ultimate: Tournament runs July 24 & 25 on the beach in Wildwood, NJ.

So far we have 5 definites, not really enough for a team. We can combine with another partial team, but tomorrow is the registration deadline so this is your last chance to get on board. If interested, please contact me sometime today!
-Alan
For those of you not watching the game and not out of town, we'll be playing Ultimate tomorrow starting at out new earlier start time of 10:00 at the Patterson Park fields. Sounds like nice weather! As always, please bring dark and light shirts and plenty to drink.

Remember that, due to softball, on Wednesdays we usually play on the fields higher up on the east side of Linwood Avenue.
-Alan
We are sending people up to the beach Ultimate tournament in Wildwood, NJ the weekend of the 24th and 25th. Due to last minute cancellations we now have 2-3 open positions available on the team roster. Please let me know if you are interested in joining, should be a lot of fun.
-Alan
Hot and scattered showers in the forecast for Wednesday – perfect for Ultimate!
Start time: 5:00
Location: SE part of Patterson Park, on the corner of Eastern Ave. and Linwood Ave. Wednesdays we play on the upper fields which are just east of Linwood.
As always, Max’s afterwards for beers.
Cheers!
-Alan
Looks like we have great weather in store for tomorrow- sunny with highs in the mid 80s. Finally a break from the heat!
As usual, the Saturday game starts at 10:00 in Patterson Park, on the fields just south of the big covered ice rink near the corner of Eastern Ave. and Linwood Ave. For a map and more details of the game check out this site:
http://pickupultimate.com/map/city/washingtondc
For the new folks, we play every Saturday at 10:00 AM and every Wednesday starting ~5:15 PM.
A reminder that these e-mail reminders are just that - reminders! Barring some sort of apocalyptic catastrophe, there will always be a game on each of these days. So, unless you hear otherwise you can safely assume the game is ON!
One more note, as many of you know, we've had issues with field space on Wednesdays due to conflicts with the BSSC softball league. The good news is that next week is scheduled to be their playoff week, which means we should get all of our old fields back starting the following week.
Finally, thanks to all of you who came up to the Wildwood beach ultimate tournament last weekend, it was a lot of fun!! We should do it again next year with a bigger squad.
Cheers
-Alan
As usual, the Wednesday game starts ~5:15 in Patterson Park, near the corner of Eastern Ave. and Linwood Ave. For a map and more details of the game check out this site:

If you don’t see us on the lower field then look at the raised field on the eastern side of Linwood. The BSSC softball should be running their playoffs this week, so this should be the last Wednesday we have to compete with them for field space!!

2) Stall counts:
We've been playing around with using a stall count when the offense is within 10 yards of the end zone (if you don't know what a stall count is, see below). Although I wasn't there Wednesday, I heard this was tried and extended to a full field stall count. Sounds like it went OK. What do folks think about routine use of a 10 second stall count all the time?
Cheers
-Alan
The stall count. The stall count is called out verbally by the "marker" who is defending against the thrower. Once the stall count is initiated, the thrower has 10 seconds to throw the disc. This is counted out by the marker, who begins by announcing, "Stalling", then counting upwards from 1 to 10, each number should lasting at least one second. To avoid a fast stall count it is helpful to add in the word stalling to the number, as in "Stalling one, stalling two, etc." If the marker says 10 before the thrower releases the disc, then the marker yells "Stall" and it is considered a turnover. Note that only the marker is allowed to call out the stall count against the thrower and he/she cannot initiate the stall count until they are within 3 meters of the thrower. Also, the marker can't start the stall count until the thrower has the disc and has established his pivot foot.
Weather looks good. Game starts ~ 5:15 in Paterson Park.
Cheers
