So when are we going to get our own social network up and running?

I've got mine running.

I used patches from http://github.com/jkriss to get it working on Heroku: http://github.com/abachman/diaspora

The node is at: http://diaspora.adambachman.org although I recommend you start your own rather than signing up on mine.

I see that they keep you busy over there at SLS.

When I get some free time yeah I'm going to go for it. In the end though I guess it depends on what the adoption rate is like.

Ok, so I saw that article. So what's this all about? A decentralized
Facebook? But you can friend people across different serviers...if
they're authenticated? I quit facebook a month ago, so not sure I'm
interested, but the git-esque aspects are neat...

Does it self patch like wordpress?  I'm too lazy to maintain something in an active development cycle at the moment.

No, this is very alpha. I wouldn't recommend sinking time into it unless you 1) know your way around Rails and 2) have been following the project. Not that having those two things is better, generally, than not having them, just that it allows you to find, fix, and forgive bugs better. The frustration you will feel will be less mysterious.

And to the "distributed Facebook" question: short answer is yes. Longer answer is: check out http://joindiaspora.com and read the blog. There's lots of big, hairy, audacious goals, but the first goal is "something that will let us talk to each other across servers" it seems.

I see that they keep you busy over there at SLS.

C'mon, 30 min is too much to spare? I've spent more time typing this email than setting up the app. ;)

Diaspora looks pretty promising, especially if you want to keep a social network small and focused as in an educational setting. Can you see some use for group discussion or collaboration?

For sure but I think the idea is that you can also scale this up and hook it up with other social networks. It also might be cool to see various groups connecting IE hackerspaces across the nation all have their own servers but then we can see what other hackers are doing.

Can you see some use for group discussion or collaboration?

Maybe as a facilitator of discussion but I think that there would be better tools. Moreover, I think if this can be tied in with those better tools (gDocs, wikis and project management software) then it could be a good collaboration tool. IE Google Wave ish but not everything lives in one place.

IDK, I feel like I need to get it up and running and play with it for a minute first. It looks like we have someone to turn to if we need help. Perhaps a Diaspora Open Hack night is in order for the next Ruby OSHN?
