Hello Folks,
Some of you may be aware of the Urban Agriculture Tax Credit, which has been available for a few years but remains difficult for many of our members to access because it requires land ownership. However, it is still a valuable program supporting urban agriculture operations across Maryland and it is up for review.
Currently, House Bill 0907 – Property Tax Credit: Urban Agricultural Property – Alterations is up for review. In 2014, the Maryland General Assembly passed HB223, expanding the Urban Farm Property Tax Credit beyond Baltimore City to the entire state. Now, HB0907 aims to clarify key aspects of the tax credit and remove unnecessary restrictions that have created barriers to access. This bill establishes a framework for an urban farm property tax credit while allowing each county to implement its own legislation within the guidelines of HB0907 to best meet local needs.
The hearing is this Tuesday, 2/18, at 1:00 PM in the House Ways & Means Committee. That means sign-up is THIS FRIDAY, 2/14, between 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM EST.
In addition to submitting written testimony, we need in-person witnesses to support Delegate Roberson at the hearing. If you cannot attend in person, there is also an opportunity to testify virtually. Including testimony from individuals who have applied or wanted to apply for the tax credit is especially important. Your voice can help ensure these necessary changes move forward!
