If you want a copy of his book 'northern bushcraft' let me know.
This is his 'try stick' pamphlet, which was developed from an old scouting magazine. It illustrates the many notches which can be made by a knife, and outlines their uses. On his survival courses students would be required to demonstrate their knife skill by making a 'try stick'. Most notches require a fixed blade knife to execute. He taught Canadian airforce pilots survival skills appropriate for boreal forest in winter conditions, equipped with a parachute, paracord and a fixed blade knife.
Lime (Tillia, Linden) or willow is easiest to carve for scouts.
Baton technique simplifies execution.
