Sub: Representation on behalf of the occupants of Girl's Hostel

Respected Sir,

We, the occupants of Girls' hostel from I, II, III, IV and V Year as well as the students of LLM and PhD (hereinafter referred to as the “student community”) submit this representation for consideration and speedy redressal of multiple concerns and complaints with respect to occupancy issues in the Girls’ hostel.

The following is brought to your notice:

  1. That there is an acute shortage of rooms in the girls' hostel. A need as basic as the provision of rooms is being compromised, significantly affecting our convenience. The gravity of the situation can be understood through the following data:

Total number of girls: 403

Batch

Number of Girls

PhD

20

LLM

7

5th Year

59

4th Year

77

3rd Year

76

2nd Year

77

1st Year

87

The total no. of rooms we currently have in the girl’s hostel is 240 all of which are occupied. This includes 5 of 6 Matron rooms which have been converted for students’ use.

  1. As a law college that preaches equality as the touchstone of human dignity, it is severe hypocrisy on the part of the administration to subject its own students to discrimination that puts the female boarders at a disadvantage, academically and practically, compared to their male colleagues.

  1. This prevalent arrangement fails to justify why female boarders should have single rooms in their fifth year only while their male peers who pay the same amount of tuition receive single-occupancy rooms starting from their second year. In fact, according to where numbers stand today, onwards the next batch i.e. batch of 2024, female students would not get a single room even in their 5th year.

  1. That there are several Maintenance-related issues in the Girls’ hostel which include but are not limited to:

  1. Washrooms: The washrooms are in dire need of repair. Almost every showerhead is rusted and dripping with water. The toilets have broken flushes and broken seats. Every restroom has a leak that floods the space and renders it extremely unsanitary thus causing serious health problems and hygiene concerns.

  2. Hostel Rooms: Hostel rooms haven't been whitewashed and deep-cleaned for years now, which is causing health issues such as allergies to dust, walls chipping and pieces falling, etc. Rusted curtain rods and window meshes put users in danger of contracting tetanus. Additionally, the ants and rats in the room make it difficult for us to use the rooms.

  3. General common areas: The drainage system around water coolers is blocked and often filled with stagnant water, thus becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The common rooms are filled with mattresses and old items leading to a complete waste of space. During rains, leakage of water from the ceilings is a common event. Most iron fittings in the hostel are rusted, increasing the risk of severe infections.

  1. We request the administration to take the discriminatory nature of the issues into consideration and in view of the above, now as a future course of action, we have the following demands:

  1. On a priority basis, the upcoming fifth years (Batch of 2024) and the students of LL.M. and PhD. shall get single rooms allotted as part of their academic facilitation.

  2. Moreover, as a matter of equality and prudence, more space be allocated for construction of rooms in order to make single rooms available to girls from their second year onwards.

We hereby clarify that this demand comes in light of our immediate concerns and the plight of the hostel residents. Hence, we strongly request the administration to take prompt action and not dismiss these demands.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Occupants of Girls' Hostel
