The University has issued a notice informing students to pay the mess fee as per the revised fee schedule. The administration decided to increase the mess fee by 15% which is applicable from September 2021. There's no information as to whether Executive Council (EC) has made any deliberation to approve the hike in mess. Although there are a few more issues with this notice, the larger issue is the hike in mess fee without the approval of the EC.
Students fraternity must be informed whether EC has approved the hike in mess fee. If there is no approval, students should pay the previous mess fee until the hike in fee is approved by the EC with consultation from the Hostel Mess Committee. Previously, Finance Committee's suggestion to charge 25000 rupees as a development fee from newly admitted students was put on hold after objections made in the 36th EC meeting held on 07 March 2020. We should represent our cause before the administration. And we hope that hike in mess fee shall be deliberated fairly by EC with consultation/feedback from Hostel Mess Committee or Student body.
PS: There are bigger concerns that the student body should have raised including deteriorating academic standards, placement of students, transparency in administration, academic and financial, at least we should start questioning the status quo. University Review Commission requires the immediate attention that may pave the way for reforms. RMLNLU Act mandates an independent University Review Commission to periodically inquire into the affairs of the University. No review commission has been constituted yet.
