Dear Class:

1. I have attached the pdf file of a set of practice problems in the file

tkt2010probset.pdf

Please download the file and work through the problems. It will help you in your revision of the course material.

2. I have also attached a pdf file

tkt2010midsem.pdf

This is the mid-sem test, carrying 40 marks.  Please download this file and answer the questions neatly on A4-size paper, numbering the questions clearly. Staple your answer sheets together and write your name and roll number on the top sheet.  Bring this with you to the final exam on the 26th, without fail.

The final exam on the 26th will carry 60 marks. It is an open-notes exam. You may bring your notes and any other written material, but not any books or xerox copies of books.

Please make sure that all your classmates see this message.

Best wishes,

Balakrishnan

Dear Sir,

I have informed my other classmates of the arrival of midsem and problem sets.

We feel we have very inadequate time to complete the problem sets considering we have other endsems on friday, saturday, tuesday and thursday.

It would be great if its possible to postpone the endsem (and submission of midsem) to friday (30th,April) or to saturday(1st May).

Hoping for a reply soon,

Thanking you,
Yours Sincerely,
Srivatsan.

The problems do not require any special "preparation", as they are standard ones whose solutions you should be able to write down fairly easily. In fact, working out these problems and the  mid-sem is going to be valuable practice for your end-semester exam by way of revision. No other special preparation should really be necessary. And I'm not asking that you submit the solutions to the problem set, just that you go over them and see if you generally understand how to go about solving them.

I understand your requst for postponement of the exam. This is exactly what any student would want. But let me say (using the wisdom of hindsight) that it is better to get the exam over and done with on the officially scheduled date, so that you have all the time available for the subsequent exams. There is no such thing as being "totally prepared" for any exam! And the exam that I'm  setting  is not going to be a memory test requiring extensive memorisation or intricate calculation. It only calls for some basic understanding of the subject matter that has been covered in the classes.  As there are no holidays between the 26th and the 30th, it does not appear to be advantageous in any respect to shift the exam from the 26th to the 30th, as things stand right now.
