Hi,

Here is the schedule of people who have taken responsibility to LaTeX
Balki's lectures. Here are the volunteers from the first three
lectures.

Lecture 1: Arun
Lecture 2: Ramya(?)
Lecture 3: Akarsh

We need a volunteer for Lecture 4 this Friday and further volunteers
for Lectures 5,6. Please respond ASAP.

@Arun, how is the LaTeXing for lecture 1 going? Do you need any help?

There is a lot of fun stuff to do with regard to the elastic
constants. As Balki pointed out that there are only TWO independent
constants but several constants are defined. He mentioned four in his
lectures and there are two more -- usually called the Lame
coefficients. Wikipedia has a neat table (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Lame_coefficients )connecting up all this -- it would be nice to
generate it on our own starting from the definitions. I also found
this neat online reference: http://www.efunda.com/formulae/solid_mechanics/mat_mechanics/stress.cfm

Er, I thought I was the one to TeX this one? I am ok with Ramya doing
it if she wants to. I will TeX next Monday's lecture. :-)

Sir,
      The TeXing part was done within two days of the first lecture except for the diagrams. I tried installing xfig to draw the diagrams but I could not even install it properly. Then Naveen had said he would help me in the figures but he was busy and fell sick. So, now I'll have to try drawing the figures myself. I shall upload the file on the group by this week.

@Naveen I wasn't sure if it was Ramya and hence the question mark. Just make sure that ONLY one of you is doing the TeXing.

@Arun I can also help you out with the figures.

I'm willing to help out if TeXing if needed.

Siva

Ps : I feel this should be done as soon as possible; because as time passes, the inclination to TeX past notes decays drastically :P

Er, a little doubt. Weren't we supposed to keep this secret?(I mean,
from Balki). He has been sent an invite to this group and he might
already be here ;-)

I told him about it as it appeared inevitable that he would find out after he was invited to become a member of this group.

I agree with Siva that it is better to TeX the lectures right away. Akarsh can TeX another lecture after he completes his GRE.

what s latex?

Its a sort of "programming language" to typeset scientific articles.
Generally MSWord becomes too bad and time consuming for scientific docs. Also, you end up spending infinite time to make it look "beautiful"! And some times you lose the structure of the doc just because of this beautification. Latex helps u write in a structurally pleasing way. And of course its much much more powerful than msword, as in, you can do many more things with it. Writing mathematical formulas in a pleasing way is what most beginners will think latex is used for, but its really much more than that.

Does anyone know of a book which introduces the basic programming syntax of latex in a beginner-friendly way? Ofcourse package-specific things must be learnt from its manual, but any links to a book which explains the general programming syntax?

Also, do the seniors have some well-written, easy to understand latex code which they dont mind sharing?

I am assuming that you have TeX/LaTeX installed in your computer --
usually true with most Linux systems. Here is the analog of "Hello
world". Save the following 8 lines as "hello.tex".
-----------o< cut here >o---------------
\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{a4}
\begin{document}
Hello world \\
\textbf{Hello world}\\
\textit{Hello world}
\textsf{Hello world}
\end{document}
-----------o< cut here >o---------------

Process it using the command "latex hello.tex; dvipdf hello" This will
create a file called "hello.pdf" which you can view using
xpdf/gpdf/acroread ....

Hi,

A couple of nice latex references I can suggest are "A not so short guide to LaTeX 2e"(by Tobias Oetiker) & "Latex cheatsheet"(by Winston Chang). Googling for those terms will give you the respective pdf files.

You can do what Prof.SG suggested using any text editor (vim/emacs/gedit/kwrite). Or you can use softwares like Kile, Winefish, Texmaker, etc which will simplify your job [when you want to write non-trivial latex documents :-) ]
These give you very powerful IDEs where (among other things) you can just type and then compile and generate pdfs for viewing with a single click.

HTH.

Regards,
Siva

Ps:
For those of you who use windows, and dont have access to linux, try this:
http://www.math.cam.ac.uk/undergrad/catam/ccatsl/latex.html

I've never tried running latex on windows, so I can't comment on the stuff mentioned there. :P
If you do find something useful, it'll help a lot of people stuck with windows. ;)

Naveen is to LaTeX this Friday's lecture (No. 5). Volunteers for next week requested.

Lectures 1 and 4 have been completed by Arun and Dushyant but are sadly in done in Lyx. I am in the process of converting them to standard LaTeX and should be done by the end of the week. As Siva correctly pointed out, it is better that we LaTeX lectures immediately. So I think it might be a good idea to relieve Akarsh of the chore of LaTeXing lecture 2 -- we need a volunteer for this?

You mean lecture 3? Ramya is doing lecture 2 right?

Oops. Ramya is doing Lec 2. So Siva should do Lec 3 (the one Akarsh was supposed to do). Here is the link to the spreadsheet where I am keeping track of things.

Hi
So who is TeXing today's lecture ?

I can do the TeXing for today but I still haven't learnt using
LaTeX and it will take me a while to do in that case :(

@Arun I have put your name down for Lec 6 (Friday 13.11.2009). Do it in LyX and then export as a LaTeX file if it is too much of a hassle.

We need volunteers for the coming week (Mon/Fri=16/20.11.09).You can make an entry in the spreadsheet and send an email to the group. Does Balki plan to take a lecture on Tuesday as we are supposed to follow the Monday timetable that day?

Lectures 1-4 are more or less ready. I am reading through them and making corrections. I hope to upload v0.9 (v1.0 will need Balki's certification!) soon.
