In the middle of this blurb:

http://www.pinktruth.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1689:a-former-mary-kay-directors-story-and-numbers&catid=52:moving-up&Itemid=79

is a chart with one director's income and expenses. Obviously,
something went wrong there as her actual profit after expenses is not
a living wage. Is it that (I suspect this is at least part of the
problem) she went for car and director too soon, before she was ready?
Or are there other tips a successful director could offer to prevent
her consultants from ending up in a similar mess?

I'm not under the illusion that money management is easy. At least not
for most of us. MK4ME, what's your analysis and advice here?

Thanks,
Miranda

Miranda,
I dont know if you have seen some of the comments that have been added
to that posting but they are interesting. Look at the cost of the
meeting room she was spending 200-300 dollars a month on a meeting
room! There are directors who have a 100 unit members that dont have
a meeting room! I dont know what is going on in MK where NSD's are
telling people to get help (maid, secretary.etc) and have meeting
rooms. If you have a unit of 200 people I could understand this but
believe me there are cheaper places to have meetings than hotel
rooms. If you dont have a big pretty house people understand you can
meet in a church meeting room and they wont charge much. The only
expense I can see that you have to have is the director suit. Did you
notice almost ALL of these women said they ran up their credit card to
keep the unit going? If you look on the front of the blog where I put
listen to Tammy Crayks talk to some directors its under the power of
the powerstart. She said (and I believe her because she has a strong
National area) that her area was built on skin care classes and not
massive recruiting. She does not believe in massive inventories or
recruiting to get tons of people.

She said that you will have success for a while but if you recruit a
bunch of people who were never facialed your foundation will come
crumbling down. Her story is powerful even if it is half true. She
is not a big author of warm chattering either. She is a devout Mormon
and most of them are ethical I believe her because when she came into
MK she was already rich she didnt need the money. She wanted
recognition (must be nice) but listen when you get a chance.

I scanned this quickly... my first opinion is there is alot of stuff
that really looks off... if one reads what her post says but... I will
take some time and sit down and look it over (analysis it) and work
one up for myself to post.. But just think if how much better this
would look if she had even been Selling $2000 worth of product a
month?
It is very sad they seem to keep missing the point that we are suppose
to be selling product!

I cant describe it but that is why (when you get time) I wanted you to
listen to Tammy Crayks director training on her website on the link I
sent to you. Its nothing that you have not already heard but she said
that if "you continue to just recruit and dont do skin care classes
there will be no more Mary Kay Cosmetics" this was in 2007 when she
said this. She said she knew she was taking liberties by saying this
but she didnt mean they would go out of business. I think she meant
that the govt and places that crack down on recruiting and making
false claims (direct sales companies) she didnt want MK to be linked
into that. The way she talked about what the power start could do was
breathtaking. She asked one director who had 356.00 in one month for
production to do power starts for 6 months and her husband said its
either me or Mary Kay. Then she went on to describe how her
production had jumped to 20,000 a month and this was just on her and
her personal recruits from doing a power start. Tammy was saying even
if you do half of that its worth it. She also mentioned some women
who were solely supporting themselves on MK from doing power starts.
When I listened to it I had never looked at it this wayl If
everything she says is true and the numbers work a director and two or
three people doing power starts and working full circle can keep a
unit together you dont have to have a ton of DIQ's (although that
would be nice). She also said get the things out of your mind about
areas being saturated, nobody wants to but Mary Kay and statements
like that. As a matter of fact after listening to this she was
basically saying there are women doing massive recruiting and doing
things that are not the Mary Kay Way and that is why people are
dropping out. She said if you show someone how to make money they
will not leave you but if you just recruit them and they are not
facialed and they dont see money exhange hands at a skin care class
they will become discouraged. She hit home that we are supposed to
be selling product. Even if you go from a Caddie to another car you
still have a car, if you lose your unit and want to start over or dont
start over you can still make money. Many of the women on PT are a
product of being trained improperly, not having the right ethics, or
for whatever reason they dont want to do the business anymore and
thats fine. When I see women constantly and 80 percent of the women
on the board have done that according to their stories constantly
using credit cards or taking out loans from the cajoling of an NSD or
a senior director its time for them to take a stand and decide if they
need to get out or where they want to be on the career path. I know
there is more money to be made in directorship but some of these women
made more money as consultants.

I love Tammy... I have heard her speak many times and needless to
say... I totally agree with her. (I have to brag a little) since
several years ago when the 20/20's were popular (Mary Kay did several
promotions) - I had earned dinner with Mary Kay at Leadership
Conference... I met Tammy (pre NSD) at a dinner and after spending
the evening chatting... she asked if I would be guestspeaker on her
conference call. I was flattered because even though I am always
consistant and am happy with what I earn, I am not a 1/2 million
dollar or above director and yet she still felt what I had to say was
important enough to have me say it to her future area. I will get a
chance to listen to this hopefully in the next day or two.. but we
all know I truely belive there is good money to be made in MK if you
are willing to book facials and parties and sell this product that
people do want.

Got a cost-containment method you'd be willing to share with the consultants on here? (other than don't go crazy on section 2 lol)
