As one of the event organizers, I can tell you we've rode many Baja miles on bicycle and have lots of Baja highway experience. We understand it can still be very dangerous to bicycle the Baja peninsula without the utmost in safety precautions. That is why we are working very closely with the state, Green Angels and the various local municipalities and why we are keeping the daily rides short; most under 60 miles, and starting them early.
We are taking every precaution, including the route design itself. We have create a route that bypasses the highest traffic areas, greatly reducing the dangers. Nearly half of the route is either well traveled by bicyclists or has nearly no truck traffic. Twice each year more than 10,000 cyclists ride from
Rosarito to Ensenada, and both of these municipalities understand the safety requirements. Highway 5 from the 3 junction south back to San Felipe is wide and 4-lane the whole way. From San Felipe all the way back to Highway 1 there no traffic of any kind until reaching Highway One again north of Punta Prieta. In Baja Sur the route take the western route to Todos Santos to take advantage of the wide shouldered 4-lane that entire days ride.
