Hi group

My I am Anton, and I have been a Bajaj owner for a total of 3 days
now.
I got a Pulsar 180, at a very, very good deal.

Some basic questions, as I do not have an owners manual:
1) What petrol do I put in it? 93 or 95?

2) On the rev counter, there are green little blocks below 5000. What
does this mean?

3) Is the button on the right handle where the thumb goes the starter
button? Reason I ask, this button does nothing, and there is an
indication that the battery might not be working to well, as the
lights only work when the engine is running, and do dim drasticly when
idling. So I think its the starter button, but not enough power to get
the motor going.

4) Is it normal that the engine idles for about 30 seconds to a
minute, before being able to rev it? This seems more predominant in
the morning.

5) Where is the licence holder supposed to be attached to the bike?
(They previous guy never had it on the bike) It looks to me it should
be at the back on the left just behind the shock.

6) What is the maximum weight the bike can carry? With me and my son
on the bike, we seem to bottom out, and scrape what I think is the
centre stand on the ground.

7) Since the bike has a fuel gage, does it have a reserve setting? Is
it ok to leave this valve permanently open while I use it every day?

8) When I get to about 7 000 revs, the bike starts to vibrate
considerable. Is this normal?

9) What should a basic service cost on this bike (just over 10 000 km
done)
I have been quoted R1200.00 with back brakes, and a full check and
service.

10) Is there something I should really know, or be careful of on the
pulsar?

I have used the bike for the past 2 days to get the the Rhodesfield
station and back, and thus far have saved R19.00 on parking fees. That
is more already then what it is costing me in petrol.

No need to answer all the questions in one response. Hopefully someone
else can answer some of the others.

Regards
Anton

Hi Anton

I have a pulsar with 26000 km on.
I use 93 octane. I tried 95 there was no difference.
Mine doesn't have green blocks. Probably a decoration. If it was important they woul all have it on.
The starter button is correct. Make sure it is in neutral when you push the button or else you have to pull the clutch in. The battery might be shot have it tested.
The battery is only there for starting purposes. Once it is going it runs of the magneto that is why the lights dip when idling and go brighter when you rev it.
Mine normally idles ok after about a minute on cold mornings and starts rev correctly after about 3 minutes. In summer not so crucial.
I mounted mine on the inside of the back foot peg LH side.
I think it is about 160 kg. Set the shocks harder it might help. I have never lifted on it.
The fuel gauge is very inaccurate. Use the trip. I hit reserve on about 550 to 640 km depending on what speed. There is still enough fuel to do about 100 km.
I close the tap. It has vacuum carbs but I always close it.
It is single cylinder and it is pretty smooth. At around 7200 rpm they run at pretty much optimal performance. Wouldn't worry too much.
The mosty expensive service I have paid for is R1350 with a new chain and front brakes.
The electrical plugs tend to corrode which results in the dash lights not operating and min e started to pull lousy. Pulled them out and put conductive grease in. All sorted.
It is actually a great commuter. I have a Kevin Schwantz RGV Suzuki but I ride my pulsar a lot more.

Hope I could help

Hi, Anton

I have a PDF of the owner's manual and a useful workshop manual that I
found on the internet. Drop me an email and I'll forward them to you.

I'll write some responses to your questions at some stage, I agree
mostly with what Gregg has said. Congrats on your purchase, the
Pulsar is an amazing bike!

Regards
James
