Hi group

My Bajaj 180 gave in a few days ago, and I took it in to a bike shop
to see what was wrong.

The verdict: Engine seized. Well the piston conrod portion seized.
The cost: R 7,300.00 for the parts. Labour added at least another R
1000.00.

There is no way that I am spending that amount on fixing her.

If I rememeber correctly some of the parts I need:
1) New piston
2) Crank
3) Big end and small end bearing.
4) New sleeve
...... there were some more, but I cant remember them.

So my question to the group is:
Is there some other way, of getting these parts?
Maybe a way or somewhere to get a good second hand engine?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks and regards
Anton

I'm selling my old Bajaj to a friend so that he can use it for parts. So my suggestion is to pick up a cheap old deal on Gumtree for the same reason i.e. saw one on sale about a month ago for R4,500

Yeah, I agree, you could contact a few Chinese spare shops, they
sometimes have a spare engine, brand new for less than that, and you
could also source the very same engine you want, and have it
imported. I am very specific about my oil in my engine, I always
check the level before starting in the morning, and always check for
leaks. Constantly servicing at every 1000km interval. Was it a lack
of oil or just general failure?

There was still oil, but it was lower then it should have been.
Bottom line. Yes it was my own fault.

I was going to have her serviced in about 300 km time.

I'll leave here under cover at home, and try and look for an engine, to replace the old one with.
Even if it takes 4 or 5 months. I am sure I will find something somewhere.

Been looking and finding a few Bajajes which have had seized engines. I think I found two this morning.
I found another Bajaj which front end damage. The guy is selling it as spares. I offered him R1,800.00 for the engine.
No new yet. Having my fingers crossed.

Hi Anton

My brothers bajaj also seized. If we find anything good Ill let you know.
You could try jonway 0117946399 I think this is their head office, if Im correct they import bajaj.

Hi Lourens and group

Thanks that will be appreciated, if you could let me know.
How much have you guys been quoted for the repairs?

My decision is to scour the net perhaps for a 180 that has had a
prang,
but the engine is still good.
Then buy the engine, hopefully for under R2000.00.
Then go through the schlep of getting the second motor onto my bikes
registration.

If all that fails, then sell the bike as parts.
Something to the effect of:
Back wheel - R 300.00
Front wheel with forks - R 500.00
Front mud guard - R 150.00
Front fearing - R 200.00
Side fearing (two together) - R 250.00
Tank - R 300.00
Seat - R 100.00
Back Cowel - R 400.00
Frame - R 500.00
Carburettor - R 100.00
Clocks - R 150.00
Engine (Seized) - R 100.00

If I were to do this are the above prices acceptable?

But the bottom line is the bike is paid for, and if it stands 6
months
before I get another engine its ok, nothing further lost.

I saw my dream bike though ... Yellow BMW F650GS .... I am thinking
of
buying it, but I dont want that extra expense right now.
Decisions, decisions.

Till the next post.

Got a engine seize on Friday on the way back from work.

Seems like this is an Bajaj Virus we all got recently :-)

Jonway Head office quoted about R3900 (after 10 % discount to repair
the complete engine)
It sounded WAY to much, but after I read these comments, it seems all
reasonable.

Pity that there was NO oil light indication prior to the engine seize.

"> You could try jonway 0117946399 I think this is their head office"

Hey Anton

How many km's did your Bajaj have on the clock? Mine is now 52 000km
and still going strong.....use a little oil but nothing to worry
about.

Hi niffobti

Wow, that is much cheaper then the quote I got.
I wonder if I would get the more or less the same price if I phoned
them...

Did you speak to head office?
Did you take the engine in for them to look at and quote?

I rode my dream bike today. BMW F650GS. Yellow. (I have a thing for
yellow bikes)
But I don't have the cache spare at the moment to buy it comfortably.

So paying R4000.00 to have it fixed might be an option I am willing to
look at.

Mine now has about 17 500 on the clocks. So still quite low.
I can now kick myself that it seized. Nobody to blame but me.

Lets hope I can get her fixed.

We haven't open the engine yet to see whats wrong.
When we do Ill let you know.

If you sell the spares of the pranged bike you didn't use, I would like to buy the carb and CDI from you.
My bike has some issues and I think the problem might be with the carb or CDI.

that same thing happened to me about 2 years ago... ran out of oil, engine siezed - my fault completely for not checking the oil often enough and was then told that there is not oil warning light on the bajaj.
I paid R5,000 for a new engine.

You guys have got me worried now.

My 180 only has 2,200 km on the clock. This morning I checked the oil window and it's black, this is 200 km after the service!

Some questions if I may:

* What colour is the window when the engine is full with clean oil?

* What colour is the window when the engine is full with dirty oil?

* How long does it take oil to become dirty (with decent driving)?

* What colour is the window when there's no oil?

Many thanks :-)

I was looking at my engine this morning, as I was figuring out how to
cool it down in summer. Obviously temps is major.
I noticed there was a plug on the right hand side of the engine, that
does not serve a purpose. I wonder if one could fit an oil pressure
sensor in there, and from that connect it to the side stand light.
This will indicate when the engine is low on pressure or oil. Just a
thought but I'm definitely going to check out if there is a way to get
oil pressure from the engine. There must be a way.

Hi, this is my first post, ive bought a 2009 bajaj pulsar 180
recently.

You guys managed to scare me, just to be sure, at what level should
the oil be? And could something go wrong if you overfill the oil?

mine has 33,000 but has a number of issues - magneto & flywheel apparently need to be replaced; hole in exhaust (got one fixed, sounds as if there's another); bike cuts out as I'm approaching a corner (clutch issue?)
hence the decision to get rid of it as I'm not going to spend heaps on a cheap bike.

have recently upgraded to a BMW 650GS VERY happy that I can now overtake up hill :-)

Hi Francios

Some good questions.
Don't know the answers though

I do know the oil does turn black very quickly.
Someone once explained it to me.... something to do with the molecules
working or heating up or something.

I do know on my Bajaj there is a little oil stick on the thing.
I'll have to read up on how to check the oil level. I have no idea how
to do that .... yet.

Hi All

The 180 and Avenger have been going some time now. How come all of a sudden you guys are coming up with seizure problems e.t.c?

I’ve got 14500km on my Avenger and haven’t use 100ml oil since 0 km.

I must agree that there are certain rust spots developing, speedo has a mind of its own. But otherwise it’s a pleasure to get to work and back despite the Highveld temps.

I think there was an entry a few months back on this site  about the change in oil spec, haven’t  had time to back track.

Vanessa I would also like a BM but at what cost?

By the way who has a Bajaj around Boksburg /Benoni/Kempton Park, I have seen a few but it would be good to get together and chat.

It was nice to see 3 Avengers and 180’s down in  Margate for the Harley run.

Rgds Bill

Hi Vanessa

The F650GS is my dream bike. Hopefully end December I can "upgrade".

Yep the Bajaj is a little under powered. I would have loved to have it
in a 250 cc size. That would have been great for to work and back.

Since my Bajaja engine seized, I have been looking at bikes.
I took a Kawazaki 650 for a test ride. Nice Lots of power. ..... but
it was not as nice as I had hoped,
I like the riding position of the Pulsar.
Then decided to test ride a Yellow F650GS. Riding position better, but
the Bajaj somehow felt a lot smoother. Smoother ride, and smoother
gear changes.

One day I'll upgrade. But hopefully I can get my little Bajaj alive
again.

Hi Nelis

I don't think you need to be scared.
And I *think* over filling is bad.
I found this link: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080225234421AAhuQHo
There is a reason why there is a min - max level on the dipstick (of
my car)... not sure on the bike.

Bottom line. Check your oil level once a month or so. If it starts
using oil then check it every week, and top up as needed.

My car is quite old, and uses one pint of oil every month. She still
runs fine. I am managing the issue.

Last night I saw on the Bajaj Pulsar spec, that the bike should be
serviced every 2000 km. I did not know this. The last service was
little over 4000 km ago. SO again my fault as to what happend.

So don't be scared or alarmd. Just be careful. And do the services
when required.
Learn from my mistake ...

Anton

I just phoned head office.

Asked them how much a new 180cc engine would cost.

Howe much do you think?

I am sure you can double your answer and you would still be to low!!

Are you ready for the answer....
Its a whopping R 25 000.00 .... (Twenty-five-thousand-bl00dy-Rand....)

I said "But a new bike only costs R15 000.00"
Their answer "We don't have stock of engines, and we will need to fly
them in from India".

I think I will take the engine in to my local Bajaj dealer in Kempton
Park, and see what he says it will cost.

Still cant belief what Jonway head office told me.....

Hi Guys,

My Avenger has now done 15 000 on the freeway down here at the coast. Has not used a drop of oil and apart from a new chain has not cost a cent in maintenance. Only problem at the coast is the cheap chrome work nwhich tends to rust quickly, I have decided that an oil change at every 1 000k is worth it in the long run. Oil is still very clean when changed.

Hi Anton.
Head office is quite impressive ... mostly.
They picked up the bike next to the road and took it to their
workshops.
About 25 km drive.
Then quoted on the repairs. After I accepted the quote it took 1 day
to repair. Picking her up later today.
She got about 27 000 mk's on.

The Oil light not working seems like a secret plot.

The Oil window needs to be cleaned from outside to get reading.

Stand bike on wheels in upright position, NOT ON STANDS.
Then the oil should be halfway in the window.

No dipstick. and yes .. overfilling is BAD.

Called again to confirm, Final price will be just under R4000 for the
complete job.

If you looking for 250cc power .. get the Bajaj Pulsar 220 cc. Same
torque as regular 250 cc bikes.
CDI, dual sparks as well as patented exhaust ad that extra power.

PS:
Nope I am not a bike salesman.

Got bike back ... YAY.

She is all better now ... got to go slow for 1st 300km's though.

Total cost = R3924.11

R800 is for labour.
R100 for consumables.

So ... almost new engine (on the inside) for just over R3000.
Jonway Head Office ... you impressed me.

The service intervals are a little confusing (at least to me). I.e., here it's 5,000km: http://www.bajajauto.com/images/maintainance/Bajaj_Pulsar_180_UG_IV.pdf, elsewhere on a Bajaj web page I've seen it specified as 2,5000 km, and SAM/Jonway specify 2,000 km.

Personally I find 2,000 km rather inconvenient, but I'd rather sacrifice convenience than an engine ;-).

I go to Silver Spokes.

They are not to far from Festival Mall, in the industrial area.
Always got good service from him. Always helpful.

They Jonway guy in Edenvale is useless. Lots of attitude when I went.

I took the engine past his shop today and he had a look at it.
He said he just did another Bajaj a month or so ago, and that repair
came to R5800.00
He said he would do it for the same price for me.

I opted not to go for it. I am sure I can find a cheaper way to get my
bike going again.

So, I think that was the lost possibility that I would get her fixed
in the short term. Now she will get her cover over her, and stand for
a few months until I find a cheap replacement engine.

And it seems like I might be upgrading to my F650GS sooner then
antisipated.
As I feel now, I'll miss riding here though.
