Dear All,

We had mentioned while dispatching our 1st Issue of River Basin Transact  that the present pace and direction of development bandwagon in Odisha, made it imperative for its civil society and citizens alike to give more attention to its rivers, before it became too late.

During this quarter (Apr-Jun), there are quite a few such civil society responses towards redefining the way our rivers are being managed. While Dakshin Odisha Vikash Parishad (DOVP) came up with a suggestion to have Integrated River Valley Project in line of TVA in USA to manage South Orissan Rivers, State Govt resolved not to allow any new industry to draw water from the Brahmani and the Baitarani. Towards the end of the quarter alignment of civil society and political parties around MBA (Mahanadi Banchao Andolan) to protest diversion of Mahanadi water to POSCO and IOC made the headlines local dailies.

We present herewith 2nd Issue of Quarterly River Basin Transact with these and many other river news, on behalf of Baitarani Initiative, Odisha Water Forum and Odisha State Center of FPWCI. We also thank many of our well wishers who responded with suggestions and appreciations.

We are sure with your feedbacks and solidarity; this humble initiative would go a long way in spreading basin literacy and raising basin concerns.

Best Regards

Pranab

Dear Pranab,

Hello!

On various Water Issues of the state and of the country, Orissa Water Forum should initiate discussion. One of the crucial issue is the legislation on ground water, prevention of pollution, access and control, quality etc. Can we have some meeting soon? Let us discuss this as soon as it is possible.

In the past, we had taken so many decisions but so far nothing is implemented. The Dist. Water Fora  are all waiting for our inputs.

Trust all is well.\

Achyut

Dear Pranab and Priya,

Once again well done. It has come out really well.

On page 3 where you have the news about Brahmani you have mentioned that the Odisha govt. has decided not to supply water from Brahmani for hydro power projects in Odisha. Then immediately there is a para on Rengali multi-purpose project which has also hydro-electric component. Is Rengali on Brahmani or some other river? if is on Brahmani then how do we say that water form this river would not be given for power generation? I do not know whether I have missed something!

Warmly

Joy

Dear Joy,

thanks for the critical look at the RBT.

It is about not supplying water to 'new power projects' (thermal) - please refer last news in page 4. Somehow, it was wrongly translated to 'hyrdo-electricity project' in the news against 'Brahmani'.

Yes! Rengali is the Dam on the Brahmani.Incidentally, as on July 29th 2010, Rengali was producing 132.9 MW (avg) which was third highest hydropower production among all dams (after Balimela and Burla-Hirakud).

Best Regards

Pranab
