Dear Advisors and Well Wishers of Baitarani Initiative,

Greetings from the Baitarani Initiative, Shristi, Odisha!

It has been quite long, since we have interacted.

Following a humbly successful 1 year action research and documentation initiative generously supported by SDTT and carefully nurtured by all of you, we had some really tough times to continue this work with a lull phase coming in. However, for about a year now, we have been able to start some small initiatives and trying to continue our work in the basin and on action research and networking pursuits around water sector on Odisha.

One such initiative is working on Water Conflicts in Odisha. Since this February, Baitarani Initiative is hosting the ‘Odisha State Centre’ of ‘Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India’ and working on a project ‘Engaging with Water Conflicts in Odisha’ with support from Arghyam Trust, Bangalore. This project seeks to work towards documentation, resolution and prevention of active water conflicts in Odisha in association with other local Civil Society Organizations under the guidance of ‘Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India’ (http://conflicts.indiawaterportal.org/), hosted by ‘Society for Promoting Participative Ecosystem Management’ (SOPPECOM), Pune.

We are in process of uploading details about this project including activities being undertaken at the Baitarani website and will send you an update as soon as it is ready.

We are pleased to share with you an activity that we have just started under this project. Please find attached the Second Issue (Jun 09) of ‘Water Feeder’ – a monthly dose of Water News compiled from Odia news papers.

This is an attempt to compile and analyze water-related news published in Odia dailies with an objective to help water professionals and enthusiasts to capture and comprehend issues and conflicts around water (through eyes of media With a quick exposure to geographical, seasonal and media perspective of water issues and conflicts in Odisha, it also aims at stimulating thoughts and actions towards improved water future of Odisha.

This second issue comes with little improvement, thanks to lots of encouraging and constructive feedbacks from many of you.

We look forward to your comments and Feedbacks (Pl send your response to bait...@gmail.com)

Best Regards

 Pranab, Priyabrata and Subhendu

Dear Pranab,

Greetings from 'Water Initiatives Orissa' & 'Combat Climate Change Network'!!

Thanks for sharing the second round of Water Feeder - a timely and good initiative.  We understand how much of an effort goes into such a process and how financial support counts.  Good that you have overcome the lull phase and are starting an active phase once again.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you and others in the group that we had followed the media closely for two consecutive years and had been updating people about the coverage of issues.  We did that in a different format (rather a mix of formats including both e-alerts and print alerts) and the response was quite good. We are still doing that to some extent but the pace has reduced a bit and the approach has diversified.  Our initiative is called "Water Meter".  What I want to say here is the importance of this initiative and the response we got from various sections was too encouraging.  So, I congratulate you again for this timely and much needed initiative!!

I would also like to take this opportunity to request you to please try to update us on the works of the forum in Orissa as well.  That would help us understand the issues better.  Just a request!!

Look forward to the Water Feeders and your leadership in educating us on water issues.

Thanks and regards,
