A rational exploration of correlations between science and spirit

Spirit is an important, yet elusive, concept to explore. Due to historical reasons and current scientific outlook, the concept of spirit is not considered worthy of serious exploration. Indeed, in today’s atheistic atmosphere, it is shunned. David Bohm, one of the most influential scientists and philosophers of the 20th century, believed that the widespread crises that humanity is experiencing, be they in the scientific, social, psychological, and/or political spheres of life, are due to the fragmentation that is afflicting human thought. In his view, existence is an ‘undivided whole’ and such a conceptualization is the key to having a coherent explanation of everything. In this presentation, we will explore the Bahá’í concept of spirit. Spirit is often examined through a theological lens. We will examine it rationally, drawing upon ideas from cognitive science, mathematics, and physics. My hope is to demonstrate that the Bahá’í construct of spirit addresses Bohm’s concern and can play a pivotal role in overcoming the existing fragmentation of thought and how we study different phenomena.
