Thisblog is a continuation of my previous blog where I demonstrated Map Viewer Charts for data exploration. The web app that we will be focusing on in this blog is Chart Viewer in ArcGIS Instant Apps. Why? Because using its template, we can display multiple charts to complement a map.

In this tutorial, we will use Chart Viewer from Instant Apps to publish this web app using a web map containing charts created in Map Viewer. Chart Viewer supports all chart types offered in Map Viewer (bar, line, pie, histogram and scatter plot), hence our web map can contain any or all chart types.


We will need to sign-in into our ArcGIS Online account to access Create App options. We will be using this web map that was created in the previous blog using Map Viewer. You can use your own web map to follow along, just ensure that the web map is saved in Map Viewer and has at least one chart in it. Once you have a web map open in Map Viewer, click on Create app and select Instant Apps from the dark pane.


ArcGIS Instant Apps offers a variety of web app templates based on your requirements like Exhibit, Nearby, Chart Viewer etc. In this tutorial we will use the Chart Viewer template to publish our web map and charts together in a web app. Next, select Chart Viewer from the layout options. Give your app a title and hit Create app.


Configure your Chart Viewer app template using the five steps explained in this blog. I generally proceed with using the default settings unless I am working on more than one layer or require customization.

As one of the new ArcGIS Instant App, Chart Viewer allows you to display your charts alongside your map. App authors can display multiple data-based charts configured in Map Viewer to compliment information in the map. Chart Viewer supports all the chart types in the Map Viewer: bar, line, histogram and scatter plots. Up to three charts can viewed at the same time, along with the map. For example, in this app view a scatterplot comparing monthly housing cost exceeding 30% of monthly income for renters vs homeowners, a bar chart showing the distribution of homeowners with mortgages exceeding 30% of monthly costs and chart comparing renters to owners, all while the map is visible. Just like in the Map Viewer, you can interact with the chart and map together by making selections.


Start by authoring your charts in the Map Viewer. After charts have been created in the web map, the map can be published to the Chart Viewer Instant App. To share apps from the Map Viewer to Instant Apps select Create App > Instant Apps and select the Chart Viewer template.


Hi, the Chart Viewer app is a great start but we need the ability to enable the Legend by default. It is not intuitive to the user to have to click on the Legend icon, for which they are likely unfamiliar with what to even look for, in order to know what categories they are looking at on start up.


I do like the ability to click on the Legend items to turn on/off that item in the chart, however, it would be great if it was possible to include a bit of text to guide the user toward this capability.


I also agreed with this. I am currently running into the same situation. I would like to have the legend details displayed on start up of the chart. Right now, users need to click on activate legend in order to see the statistics or key.


similar to this post: -Viewer-Creating-a-clustered-column-line-char... I have created a chart with bars and a line on a secondary y-axis. I also used the method to form the secondary y-axis: Iif(StartsWith([Account]), 'Sales'), [Amount], 0)


The problem now is that the bars are getting thinner by drawing in the 0 values and also the legend is overloaded by the 0 values. So I wanted to ask if there is a way to filter out these 0 values and not display them?


thanks for your answer. In my dropdown menu I dont have the option to choose the 'Edit Filter' as you can see int the image. I only have the option to use the Edit Filter via the Data Tab at the top. But then the bars of the selected account is not shown either. Also trying to type the full name shown in the legend like this in the filter doesnt work:


Ribbon or menu makes no difference if you only have one filter on the page. If you have multiple ones (i.e. the ribbon looks like what shown below), then the one from the menu will affect only that widget, and it should appear fine.


If you want to apply a single page-wide filter, but only to certain widgets, you can enter it with the Edit Filter button, then select (one by one) the widgets that shouldn't be affected, and click "Ignore Master Filters".

NOTE: Use the official, full scale NOAA nautical chart for real navigation whenever possible. Screen captures of the on-line viewable charts available here do NOT fulfill chart carriage requirements for regulated commercial vessels under Titles 33 and 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations.


I have water sampling data that includes a collection date. I can make bar and line charts of various parameters but in the (New) Map Viewer, those dates display as integer values. See attached image. The field is definitely "Date" type. It displays correctly in the OLD Map Viewer. Display Time is turned off, though the date values don't have a time anyway (and the problem was the same).


Is there a simple setting somewhere that I am missing? Do I need to do some type of conversion on the field so that the Chart Widget in the new Map Viewer reads it correctly? Or, is this an OS/Browser/Font-type issue?


@DanielShaffer2 Thanks for the map, definitely helped me figure out what your workflow was. What you're seeing looks like a bug in applications using the 4.x js-api, so I've submitted a ticket for it to be fixed. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!


Thanks for the question. Are you able to provide more detail on how the data was collected and how you configured the pop-up? A sample map would also be really helpful so that I can get a better understanding of what is going on here.


Again this occurs first in the new MapViewer. If I then open the map up in the OLD MapViewer, I also see the same problem. I must then remove and recreate the charts in the old MapViewer to get it to read the date correctly.


Perhaps it is important to note that the chart is built using values from a related table. I'm still learning how to use related tables (and Arcade in general), so it's likely that I'm doing something that is very simple the wrong way...or a more difficult way!


I have since seen in the Attribute Table information option that the viewer thinks the data type and description are not set for the Collection_Date field. I absolutely created that field as a Date in the GDB that I uploaded. Also, I don't see a way to set or change those settings in AGO.


To my knowledge Jeppview has never been free, maybe at Jeppesen they became aware of the link and removed the credentials. There's plenty of free AIP charts around, either real or for simulation only. I personally use this:


CS-PU-064: Advanced JAVA Mode. Jave version check.

The SDO reporting requires Java version 1.8 Update 25 which is not available on your machine.

"OK" is to consult the EADBasic home page for instructions on installing the required Java.

"Cancel" is to continue at your own risk, the SDO reporting might not work properly.


This was an account that was hacked and someone just published it, but it was from Korean Airlines and probably for their usage. Most probable they were paying for it, and many people was using it, and they simply discovered this fact and revoked its access. Chart Viewer 3 is not a free service, it's a paid service and this access was not legal if you were not an employee of Korean Airlines.



Basically that's it.



At least... as far as I know, or (more precisely) as far as I was told.



Eurocontrol (EAD) and FAA (USA) are publishing all their AIP information for free access in order to grant information not just to airmen but also researchers and developers. That's part of an excellent concept of safety, opening information and granting researching and developing. Other countries like Australia (for instance) don't have this approach regarding flight safety. They are so 'narrow-minded' that they were -actually- the ones who lead DAFIF to close, when Australian authorities warned DAFIF of copyright issues and threatened them to sue them. The solution adopted was to close DAFIF public access.

FWIW, FlightAware.com also has the charts for U.S. airports. Search/Go to the page for the airport you want, choose the "IFR Plates" tab, and download the ones you want. I like the flightaware site for this because they have an option to download all of the plates in a single-PDF bundle rather than one at a time.


Note: The first column displayed in the list becomes the x-axis value. The remaining columns become the y-axis. For example: To chart the number of tasks for each approver, add the "Approver" column as the first column and place the numerical value columns below the "Approver" column.
