Ryan and I parted ways in Austin, TX on Sunday. It was pretty hard.
I'm don't do well with those heavy goodbyes. It was emotional.
I rode away to meet up with a CouchSurfing guy who would host me for a
few days while I decide what to do. As I rode, my sad, heavy feelings
went away, and I felt a new freedom. I knew I would still miss Ryan,
but it's pretty cool going solo. All challenges are yours.
I found a couple of rideshares to Mexico. The timing was incredible.
One was to drive a car down to Oaxaca, get all expenses paid, $250 in
your pocket, and the guy would show you around a little and let you
stay at his place in Oaxaca, but you had to have the car permit in
your name, which carries some responsibility.
There was another ride down to Valle de Bravo, just West of Mexico
City, where I only needed to be a passenger, and I would only need to
pay for food. I liked this better. Less responsibility and free
passage. I miss the $250 but that's okay; this plan seemed more
legit.
So I crossed the border last night through Laredo. Everything went
fine. Very uneventful, it was even kind of sleepy. I'm in Monterrey
right now, and we'll be driving down to Valle de Bravo today.
We've updated the blog, although we haven't yet put up photos of our
emotional parting.
By the way, these are our general routes:
Ryan:
Austin to Santa Fe to Durango, Colorado and then North through the
National Parks in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Canada. Watch out
for the Rockies! Whoa, look out!
Eoin:
Austin to Valle de Bravo, Mexico (taking the easy way out using a
rideshare, but happy to skip out on boring South Texas) to Mexico City
(maybe) and South through Oaxaca, Chiapas, up along the coast of the
Yucatan, and down to Belize, Guatemala, and down to Panama.
