The Brewers Association of Maryland (BAM) is seeking judges, stewards, and staff for the 2016 Maryland Craft Beer Competition, a Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and American Homebrewers Association (AHA) fully-sanctioned competition. The competition includes only commercial beers produced in Maryland, and will use the BJCP 2015 guidelines for its judging. BAM seeks the most experienced judges possible, however, no prior judging or stewarding experience is required. Judging assignment preference will be given to BJCP ranked judges and those with Cicerone certification, or experience with beer brewing, sensory analysis and evaluation. Current and future BJCP members will receive points for their participation.

Date / Time / Location

Judging will occur on Saturday, August 27 2016 and the Baltimore County Center for Maryland Agriculture and Farm Park located at 1114 Shawan Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030 . The first judging session will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. and conclude around 11:30 a.m. The second judging session will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. and conclude around 3:00 p.m. We will be holding a “Judging for Beginners” session at 9:00 a.m. to provide an overview of judging to those will less experience. Breakfast will be provided starting at 8:00 a.m. and will consist of a various assortment of homemade and purchased provisions provided by our sponsors. Lunch will be served beginning around 11:30 a.m. as well.

Flight Size

We are targeting to have no more than 12 beers per flight. The more judges that sign up, the smaller the flights will be, so please help to recruit others you know who may be interested in judging.

Stewards

As always we are in need of Stewards. Our refrigeration truck will host our entries outside. Stewards get the opportunity to learn from judges, taste what they’re tasting, and get entries from storage to the tables for judging. They play a vital role in the success of the competition.

FREE PASSES – Baltimore Craft Beer Festival

As a special “thank you”, the Brewers Association of Maryland will be providing a free pass to the Baltimore Craft Beer Festival to all judges, stewards, and staff. Held on October 22, 2016 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., these passes are valued at $45 and typically sell out every year.

Cleanup

For those dedicated individuals who want to stick around and assist with cleanup, we will be splitting the remaining entries as a way to say thanks.

Travel and Logistics

If you’re travelling from out of town and pay tolls, bring us a copy of your toll receipt and we’ll reimburse you.

Damnit I already have plans that day. :(  I've judged at this twice in the past and the organization is top notch.  The fact that they give you free tickets to the craft beer fest plus free lunch and breakfast on top of drinking free commercial beers is kind of incredible.

Yeah, a pass to a beer festival is the best freebie I have seen judging so far.  Free breakfast and lunch has been standard in my experience so far.  

(Free food and beer in exchange for me bloviating about someone's beer is pretty sweet.)
