Do not post links or requests for pirated content. Do not help facilitate requests for pirated content. Do not arbitrarily encourage piracy. This includes modded game files in whole or in part. Patches and fanworks are fine.

No major game spoilers in post titles for any reason. As some versions of Reddit auto-show non-spoiler posts, any text or image post with spoilers must be marked (like a flair) with spoiler. You can mark it as spoiler using the options under the post. This rule also applies to comments -- don't drop spoilers in a non-spoiler post or that you know the user hasn't encountered yet (unless requested).

As a pioneer in the RPG realm, Dragon Quest games have a reputation for being "bread and butter" representatives of the genre. The player advances through the game by carrying out predetermined actions directly related to the progression of the plot, such as collecting a key item or defeating a particular antagonist. Usually, one of his first orders of business is to gather a party of like-minded warriors to join him on his quest. As the party traverses the landscape and various dungeons, they will be forced to fight (or, if they choose, flee from) enemies based on a "random encounter" system. Later in the game, the party often acquires improved transportation that may allow them to avoid such skirmishes. Battles are turn-based; the player delivers combat instructions each turn from an in-battle menu system. Some games feature AI that sees all party members but the Hero character responding to situations based on various factors at hand, sometimes including general orders such as "Attack ferociously" or "Go all-out with magic."

It would have been the perfect co-op game. It seems as though the devs had this in mind or something. I get the feeling that Yuji Horii or someone running the dragon quest projects has been vetoing or putting limitations on all the co-op ideas. Dragon Quest Builders 2 had co-op but it was only for one island and it was limited. Dragon Quest IX is the only one that I can think of that has full co-op gameplay.

I have no significant issues with Pomemon S/V performance and I'll be getting this game. The question is, what's the physical situation? I hear Square might be being ****s in Japan about physical supply, or is their "Buy digital" messaging just temporary?

I do have a question for those that have played the game: are battles entirely done via AI control (you issue broad "attack", "heal", etc commands), or can you turn by turn select each action like you would in a normal DQ?

@Browny You have to do a couple of the earlier stages but the later stages are optional. It's almost always a traditional DQ story boss that gates progression. The lion's share of the game is 18 large-ish areas each with a story quest and boss. The first "boss" is a low-rank colosseum battle: the enemies hit like wet noodles and it's basically impossible to lose. You have to revisit a couple times but not many but it's basically the same deal. These don't get tough until they're optional. You do get some good items from them but they aren't essential. If not having absolute control at all times is a dealbreaker, yeah steer clear. But, the AI is pretty good if you take the time to customize it (you can increase/decrease move usage move by move or even shut off moves you don't like). If you're good at building teams, you'll probably only have to repeat A and S rank: everything lower is a breeze.

If you missed Dragon Quest XI the first time around, it has you take on the role of the Luminary. Prophesied to vanquish an ancient darkness, his return was foretold but not everyone is quite so happy to see the Luminary come back. So your quest across the world of Erdrea is a long and complex one.
