As usual, for Open Events, we will have a beginners class, however the Beginners Class will start at 11:30am so everyone can be back for lunch at 1pm.  Starts are from 10am to Noon, however a late start will be available on request.  Control pickup will be at 3pm.  We will have a pizza lunch, and you are welcome to bring a salad, drinks, or dessert to share if you wish, but bringing something isn't necessary.

Added Technical Difficulty for Expert Courses

In the expert courses I have several controls that have a "sister" control on a nearby similar feature.  In some cases the control description is slightly different, and in some cases it is the same. It will be very important that you know where you are to punch correctly because the control codes will be blacked out.  If you punch incorrectly and then find the correct control you can punch that as well without being disqualified as in a regular event,  however final placement in the results will favor those who only punch the correct controls, and obviously, not punching a correct control will result in a DQ.  The technique to ace this is to stay in touch with the map as you approach the control.  Rough compass into the area and then relocating close to the control is likely to be problematic.

FoxOring ARDF Course

ARDF is Amateur Radio Direction Finding.  It is an international sport where transmitters are placed in the woods and you use a directional radio receiver and an orienteering map to find the transmitters, which are not marked on the map.  I will set a 2k demonstration FoxOring course with 5 controls.  In FoxOring courses  you orienteer to a control location that is marked on the map and the transmitter is audible with your receiver.  Then you use a radio direction finding receiver to actually locate the transmitter and punch box which is about 50 - 100m from the mapped control location. The transmitters are very low power and can only be heard from about 100m away.  I have direction finding receivers for you to use and will teach you how to use them.  This course will stay open after lunch.  Everyone is welcome to try it.
