Hi
I have a MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) and a MacMini (Leopard) on a
wired/
wireless network connected to Drobo via DroboShare using TimeMachine
only and no partitions.

The MacBook Pro backed up correctly the first time, but in all
subsequent attempts the back-up fails. When I start a back-up I get
the following message:

"Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/DroboCapsule-2/xxxxx xxxxxxxxx's
Computer.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45)."

I'm perplexed by the "DroboCapsule-2", but I assume that's not the
problem as TM manages to put a temporary sparse-bundle on the volume.

I've noticed a difference in names of the temp and original sparse-
bundles. The original created by BMFU is called
Macintosh-3_002332a0c41d.sparsebundle but I notice that there is
another called xxxxx xxxxxxxxx's Computer.tmp.sparsebundle while the
back-up is trying to run but it disappears after I get the Error 45
notice.

Could this disparity be the problem? What can I do about it?

The MacMini baks up normally.

I've been having the exact same issue for a couple of weeks now. The
initial backup worked, all subsequent backups fail. The backup of my
iMac (via wireless) continues to work however. It is only the MacBook
Pro that fails.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

As far as Drobocapsule-2: if for some reason something is already
mounted as Drobocapsule, OSX would create an iterated mount (appending
the 2). Try rebooting to clear shares, and make sure that you do not
manually mount DroboCapsule before TM backing up. Also, with nothing
mounted, make sure there is not a /Volumes/Drobocapsule directory
hanging around for some reason.

Not sure on your second problem. Did you change the computer name (in
the sharing control panel) since creating the BMFU bundle? I assume
002332a0c41d is still your MAC address?

I rebooted both Drobo+DroboShare and MacBook Pro and ran TM
immediately so as to avoid diverse volumes from mounting. No luck: I
still get Error 45, but this time with "DroboCapsule-1".

I'm not sure what constitutes 'mounted': on double reboot I get:
Drobo volume on desktop
DroboShare in SHARED in Finder - with little arrow
DroboCapsule in SHARED in Finder - without little arrow
If I close them and run TM they all reappear in the same form.

The first time the problem occurred was shortly after the first (and
only successful) back-up concluded. I changed nothing between the two
back-ups; the second was started automatically by TM. The only thing I
did was to attach an ethernet cable during the first back-up as it was
taking a long time over wireless.

No I didn't change the computer's name. I notice that there are two
different ways of naming the sparse-bundle: one with username and one
with Macintosh.

Yes the mac address is still 002332a0c41d, but there is a second mac
address for the Airport: I assume this doesn't count. I was wondering
if the problem could be due to the wired and wireless set-up so I
tried once with wireless disabled and again with ethernet unplugged.
No difference. And the MacMini backs up over both.

@DaveYHZ
Are you getting any of the same symptoms as me?
1: DroboCapsule-1 or DroboCapsule-2 in the error message
2: Discrepancy between the original name of the sparse-bundle and the
temp name (you have to look inside DroboCapsule before the back-up
fails to see it)

I am experiencing all of the symptoms you are describing. My MBP has
always been wired during TM backup, so I can count out the wired/
wireless issue. In fact the iMac (always successful) is wireless.

Did you run the CreateBackUpVolume script on each machine that needs to be backed up?

Yes. I followed your instructions very carefully. The only difference--
on both machines--was that I didn't need to restart TM as the back-up
ran completely first time. I assume this is because I was on my second
install of Drobo and BMFU. The first install went bad after a power
blackout so I reformatted Drobo and started again.

Ditto. MBP backup happened w/o restart. I was on the step:

#4. Open up TimeMachine in System Preferences, Change Disk to
DroboCapsule. If you don't see DroboCapsule, then click on it in the
Finder to mount it as a guest user. Now, start a backup. It should
fail the first time.

It did not fail, it completed the backup successfully (200+gb). All
subsequent backups have failed.

I've found a new symptom, or different problem--can't tell which. When
I go to the DroboApps Admin page, I get the following:

"Welcome to the DroboShare DroboApps admin tool. Please select a task
on the left.

Warning: include() [function.include]: php_network_getaddresses:
gethostbyname failed. errno=0 in /mnt/DroboShares/Drobo/DroboApps/
droboadmin/www/index.php on line 406

Warning: include(http://www.davidmendelson.com/droboadmin_update.php?
version=2) [function.include]: failed to open stream:
php_network_getaddresses: gethostbyname failed. errno=0 in /mnt/
DroboShares/Drobo/DroboApps/droboadmin/www/index.php on line 406

Warning: include() [function.include]: Failed opening 'http://
www.davidmendelson.com/droboadmin_update.php?version=2' for inclusion
(include_path='.:') in /mnt/DroboShares/Drobo/DroboApps/droboadmin/www/
index.php on line 406"

And on the 'Install' page I get:

"Warning: file() [function.file]: php_network_getaddresses:
gethostbyname failed. errno=0 in /mnt/DroboShares/Drobo/DroboApps/
droboadmin/www/index.php on line 158

Warning: file(http://www.drobo.com/droboapps/feed/text.php)
[function.file]: failed to open stream: php_network_getaddresses:
gethostbyname failed. errno=0 in /mnt/DroboShares/Drobo/DroboApps/
droboadmin/www/index.php on line 158"

So it looks like my copy of DroboAdmin is broken. I tried
reinstalling. But got the same. I also tried reinstalling the other
apps but AddSwap and Dropbear need DroboAdmin to reinstall so I don't
have these anymore.

The console:
I rebooted, cleared the console screen and ran TM. The only text to
come up on the Console was:
"30/4/10 11:59:45 com.apple.launchd[1]
(com.apple.netauth.sysagent[557]) Exited with exit code: 255"
I then searched for "Drobo": there were a lot of results but nothing
which--to my uneducated eye--looked helpful.
Of course, the broken Admin may mean that the error didn't get as far
as the console.

In my ignorance, I think that the problem is that the original sparse-
bundle was called Mackintosh-3_macaddress.sparsebundle but TM is
looking for a different sparse-bundle with a name like name-surnames-
computer_macaddress.sparsebundle. In other words TM doesn't seem to
consider the existing sparse-bundle because it's looking for one with
a different name.

I don't know what to tell you guys. You are doing something wrong. It sounds like TM is trying to target the drive itself instead of the sparsebundle.

I've solved the problem with DroboApps Admin and it's not related to
the back-up problem.

I had set DrobosShare's IP address to static (when it was dynamic it
reset the IP to values outside the range of my network, making it
impossible to access). In the end I worked out that I had to tell the
firewall to set DroboShare's IP to a fixed value, and tell DroboShare
to use DHCP.

Sadly, this didn't fix the other problem. Console gave: "
2/5/10 1:16:07 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.netauth.sysagent[778])
Exited with exit code: 255
and nothing else.

What would happen if I renamed the sparse-bundle? What else can I try:
Delete the sparse-bundle and start again? Any other suggestions?

jon,

1. I downloaded the Create Backup Volume tool and ran it.
2. It generated DaveYHZ-2_001ec21d2488.sparsebundle
3. I opened Finder
4. In the Shared section, I clicked on DroboShare
5. Two mount points show up; I double clicked on DroboCapsule
6. There were two sparsebundles present, one for each mac.
7. I copied the file from step 2 into DroboCapsule
8. It prompted me to Replace. I did.
9. Upon completing the copy, I waited until the next time TM would
run.
10. It is now running, Backing up 186.01GB (ethernet).

I'll add 11+ when the backup completed. If history repeats itself,
this backup will succeed. Then, with no changes on my part, all
subsequent backups will fail.

Additional Info:
Console dump while TM is running:
5/3/10 3:25:26 PM com.apple.backupd[34752] Disk image /Volumes/
DroboCapsule-1/DaveYHZ-2_001ec21d2488.sparsebundle mounted at: /
Volumes/Backup of DaveYHZ-2

If you want to hop on and see this for yourself some time, let me know
and I'll set up a LogMeIn meeting.

Dave.

Wow, those steps look nothing like the clearly detailed directions in the SetupGuideVersion2. No wonder things don't work for you reliably.

Dave, Specifically,

In your step 4: "In the Shared section, I clicked on DroboShare"
That should say DroboCapsule, NOT DroboShare. Ignore that DroboShare
even exists. Eject it.

Also, replace your 9 and 10 with (from the setup guide)
#3. Log out of the Finder and log back in.

#4. Open up TimeMachine in System Preferences, Change Disk to
DroboCapsule. If you don't see DroboCapsule, then click on it in the
Finder to mount it as a guest user. Now, start a backup. It should
fail the first time. Eject the DroboCapsule share and start another
backup again. This one should succeed. Remember, if you are on
wireless, the first backup will take a long time. Sometimes it is
better to just plug the machine in to a hub and back up the first
time.

Also, not sure if it makes a difference, but it really should not be
mounting at /Volumes/DroboCapsule-1. Could be a result of not
following Step #4 properly.

Is this the link with the instructions? http://code.google.com/p/backmyfruitup/wiki/SetupGuideVersion2
If that's not the right page, please let me know.

I followed the instructions precisely starting at "Details for
TimeMachine Setup." All prior steps are done and known to be working
since I am successfully backing up to Drobo on the iMac.

I only got as far as step 2 (After it is finished, copy the
sparsebundle to the DroboCapsule share and delete it from your
desktop) when Time Machine mounted DroboCapsule and started the
initial backup.

I just posted another screen cap of the desktop during the "initial"
backup: http://www.flickr.com/photos/87892671@N00/4576153224/sizes/l/

It shows two copies of the DroboCapsule disk on the desktop, one is
hidden.

I just renamed my sparse-bundle to the name it seems to be looking
for: ie from Macintosh-3_macaddress.sparsebundle to Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx
Computer_macaddress.spasebundle. Then I started a backup, which ran
immediately as "Backup of Macintosh-3". And I can't see any temp
sparse-bundle like I had during the failures.

I'll let you know how it goes.

@Jon -- I'm one of the most fastidious and pernickety people I know,
and I spent hours and hours trying to fix this damn problem, so you're
just going to have to take my word for it that I followed the
instructions to the letter.

I'm not trying to be an ass. If you follow the instructions to the letter, it will work. It has been tested across many people and many machines for almost a whole year now). I have yet to see a case where it was the fault of the instructions (and if it is, I quickly update them to clarify or resolve any issues).

I wish the process was easier, but if you want brain dead easy, go buy a TimeCapsule. =)

p.s. At some point soon, I'll work on porting the latest version of netatalk which should also help make things easier thanks to changes on their end.

It worked! Two back-ups done. I have no idea if renaming the sparse-
bundle is 'allowed' but it seems (fingers crossed) to have solved the
problem for me.

@Dave, if you want to try it -- from what I can see of your
screenshots -- rename your sparse-bundle as Dave's MacBook
Pro_xxxxxxxxxx.sparsebundle
where xxxxxxxxxx is the mac address.

Good luck!

Worked for me too. No failed backups, manual or automatic.

Thanks!
