I've been backing up my two laptops successfully using the latest
version of bmfu which I'm testing on my DroboShare. It is
significantly easier to setup now and seems to work great, but you
still should use my Create Backup Volume script to generate the
initial image (size doesn't matter as it will get resized).

I hope to roll up a new release as soon as I have some free time. The
day job has been really intense the last couple weeks.

cheers,

jon

Hi,

Thanks for this solution. I initially bought a Drobo 2nd gen and a DroboShare because the FS was not available in our country yet (South Africa), and still isn't. I then went about setting up DroboApps to be able to support bmfu, but I had problems with the DroboShare becoming unresponsive so I went back to having the DroboShare without DroboApps installed and just did Time Machine backups over SMB. Bad move...

I have not had one successful backup over SMB. I was attempting to backup over Wifi (802.11g) and it was failing all the time trying to do the initial 360Gb backup. I then connected it to via ethernet cable even at only 100Mbps and it seemed a lot better, but then I moved the notebook at the cable popped out and the backup stopped and the sparseimage became corrupted. My wife's notebook did successfully do an initial backup over Wifi (only 10Gb or so), but has since failed and the image is corrupted.

I learned yesterday that the corruption is probably because SMB doesn't support journalling and as soon as the image is uncleanly dropped it becomes corrupted.

So last night I reinstalled DroboApps and bmfu, and I am running the initial 360Gb backup on my notebook as I type this.

I was going to ask last night when the new version of bmfu was going to be available, but I see from your most recent message that it is close. (would a donation spur that along at all? :-) ) - don't worry I will donate anyway!

My question is what version of netatalk is included in your stock download? It took me a while to find out how to find out what version of netatalk is installed but it looks like it is 2.0.4.

From what I can see the first version of netatalk that supports TM properly is 2.0.5, and I'm guessing that what you're testing now is at least 2.0.5.

I'm assuming that 2.0.5 (and the upcoming version of bmfu) has support for lock stealing and the other error that appears in console when you do a backup under the current version of bmfu. Are these part of the journaling?

Thanks
Craig

A) Yes, DO NOT USE SMB. I've said that over and over and over.

B) I've compiled version 2.1.1 of netatalk, which is the latest
version. That will be what is in the next release.

C) You HAVE to use my Create Backup Volume script to generate the
sparsebundle (or set the right settings when creating it yourself with
hdiutil). The reason is that I set the band size to be 64meg instead
of the default 8meg. The Drobo is not very performant with thousands
of small 8meg files in a single directory and thus causes errors with
TM. I couldn't get a valid backup with 8meg bands even with 2.1.1, but
64 is working just fine.

D) As far as I know the FS is not available yet anywhere. It has been
announced, but is not on sale yet. I'm under NDA, so I'm sorry that I
can't say anything more about it.

E) Yes, the current version of BMFU uses an older netatalk which has
been hacked to kind of allow older TM versions. This version of BMFU
is not compatible with 10.6.x and especially not 10.6.3.

I'll try to find some time this week to get it out and yes, I love and
appreciate donations.

cheers,

jon
