In most cases, mobile ebook reader devices connected to your computer will be automatically detected by Adobe Digital Editions and displayed as "bookshelves" on the interface. To transfer an ebook PDF file to the device, drag and drop the ebook onto the appropriate "bookshelf". When using an app such as Bluefire Reader to view ebooks on Apple products, however, you will need to use iTunes to transfer ebook files: go to the Synch> Apps page and scroll down to see the available options for File Sharing. When adding ebooks to be transferred to the mobile device, make sure to choose the PDF file, not the .acsm file. By default, downloaded ebook PDF files are saved to the My Digital Editions folder.
Adobe Digital Editions is a Digital Rights Management (DRM) system that allows users to download some library e-books for use offline or for transfer to e-book readers. Users will require an installation of Adobe Digital Editions on their computer, as well as a free, personal Adobe ID, which can be created as Adobe Digital Editions is installed.

There are other ways to read .epub files. Mozilla has an add on if you use Firefox and you can download a free android app for your phone to do the same thing.

Now that the EPUB is readily available to Kindle readers, how can you add the EPUB to your specific Kindle device? Because this is something you might need to do if you have received a free ebook from an author, or an advanced reader copy (ARC).
Bluefire Reader is a free ereader app for PDF and EPUB content. Can be used by iPad and iPhone users to download titles from EBL, Ebscohost. This free app syncs with Adobe Digital Editions, allowing your device to download and open ebooks. Downloaded ebooks are available for off-line reading.
Adobe has its own ebook reader, called Adobe Digital Editions, for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It supports PDF, XHTML, and epub files. Adobe Digital Editions can be used to read books protected by Digital Rights Management or DRM.
Combined with the Send to Kindle tool, that makes it much, much easier to shoot an ePub file over the local Wi-Fi network to your Kindle reader in a few short seconds, either via the desktop or uploaded on the web. The change was spotted by Good E-Reader. It was previously possible to convert ePub files to another format, like Mobi, then manually transfer them to Kindle via USB or the Documents Service, without too much difficulty. But the new change means that you can do all of that without any third-party software.
