I'm new to this Back Yard Farming. About 4-5 weeks ago i bought 10
hens and a rooster. Since then I have bought 7 more hens and 4 more
roosters. I have built a coop and a pin for most of the chickens. I
have a small pin for 1 hen and 1 rooster that are the same kind. I
just have bought my Incubator. I have about 12 eggs in it right now.
I'm pretty sure that the 4 small ones that come from my small hen were
layed on the 10th. But the others i'm not really sure. It my fault
because i didn't check all of the coop and so i missed the other eggs
until later on. My first question is. Do i just keep turning them and
hope that they hatch? Also is it true that I can put a light up to the
egg and tell if it is fertil or do i have to us a candle? Next, I have
read in a book that the temp needs to be 80-85 degrees. But i've also
seen where it needs to be 90-95. Which one is it.
Thanks

Your Temp is wrong. for all chickens and most hatching eggs..the temp
is 99.5 always. You can candle the eggs with a flash light..get in a
dark room and cup the eggs in your hand. The light will show you the
bright red lines of blood..or the chick...blood lines mean good
egg,,baby inside. Eggs are good up to the 10th day...after that they
become less fertile. most people place them in the incubator at 7 days
of collection. Make sure as you collect them that you hand turn them
every day untill you get enough to incubate. The eggs you have would
not hurt to hope for the best. Make sure the temp is 99.5 if you have
then in the incubator at 80-85 degrees..they wont hatch..get rid of
them and set your next ones at 99.9 Mike
