Some reviewers found the compilation incomplete.[2][3][17] Davis and Theobald both criticized the exclusion of the Streets of Rage games in the North American version. Davis stated he preferred them over Vectorman and Theobald said Sega should have just let the compilation get a Teen rating from the ESRB.[2][3] Theobald was also disappointed that the compilation lacked SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles' Chaotix, and the other Game Gear games.[2] Jeremy Parish (1UP.com) said even combining Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection would provide players an incomplete Sonic collection, lambasting the exclusion of Knuckles' Chaotix and Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure and feeling the Master System Sonic games should have been included, not the Game Gear ones.[17] Superpanda said he would have preferred Knuckles' Chaotix over the Game Gear games and also considered its exclusion of the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast a disappointment.[22]

Intended as a successor to Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Gems Collection was conceived by Sonic Team to introduce younger players to the rare and more obscure games in the Sonic series, unlike Sonic Mega Collection, which contained the more popular Sonic games.[7] As such, it features several Sonic games on outdated or otherwise obscure consoles or cabinets. The games aside, the collection also includes additional features, such as unlockable demos of other Sonic games, videos, and promotional artwork from across the history of the Sonic franchise.

Some reviewers found the compilation incomplete.[23][9][16] Davis and Theobald both criticized the exclusion of the Streets of Rage games in the North American version. Davis stated he preferred them over Vectorman and Theobald said Sega should have just let the compilation get a Teen rating from the ESRB.[23][9] Theobald was also disappointed that the compilation lacked SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles' Chaotix, and the other Sega Game Gear games.[23] Jeremy Parish of 1UP.com said even combining Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection would provide players an incomplete Sonic collection, lambasting the exclusion of Knuckles' Chaotix and Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure and feeling the Sega Master System Sonic games should have been included, not the Game Gear ones.[16] Superpanda said he would have preferred Knuckles' Chaotix over the Game Gear games and also considered its exclusion of the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast a disappointment.[25]

Sonic Gems Collection includes a Museum, where the user can view various artwork, screenshots, videos and other content. Content in the museum is gradually unlocked as the user plays each game in the collection, though some items must be unlocked through other means. Music may also be unlocked by completing specific objectives, and unlocked music can be played by pressing / in the Museum to view the audio player.

Sonic Gems Collection features Sonic-related Sega Genesis, Sega CD and Sega Game Gear games. These classic Sega gems provide a lot of historical value, and the collection includes an extensive unlockable library of artwork, music, and even some extra playable games.

The Good
Sonic Gems Collection features some of the good Sonic the Hedgehog games, but the main features of the collection is Sonic the Fighters, which it's the first time it can be played at home consoles, Sonic Cd and Sonic R.Sonic the Fighters is a fighting game featuring the characters of the Sonic universe and some new, created only for this game, such as Bark the Polebear and Fang the Sniper. It is very fun to play and the graphics are Virtua Fighter style.Sonic Cd plays excellent with the Dualshock 2 controller, and if you never played Sonic Cd before, I suggest playing it.Sonic R is an underrated Sonic game. It is very creative, and features some new characters, such as EggRobo, Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll. This last one you may know with the interned urban legend (the curse of the Tails Doll). The rest of the games (about 5 or 6 games) are Sega Game Gear games. There is nothing very unique about them but I enjoyed some of them, such as Sonic Drift 2 and Tails Adventures. There are 2 unlockable games, which I'll not spoil them here.

The Bad
To this time, that I'm reviewing Gems, I didn't find nothing bad about this collection. Games featured are fun and they play very well with the Dualshock controller.

The Bottom Line
Sonic Gems Collection is something I was looking forward to have. I never played Sonic R, Sonic Cd or Sonic the Fighters before and I think they are very enjoyable for the Sonic the Hedgehog fans and even casual players. The Game Gear games featured are fun, but they could've been better. In conclusion, if you find this one (which I believe it's a bit rare) get it, even if you played those games before.I'm a Sonic the Hedgehog fan and game collector and I found this one a gold mine!

Knuckles' Chaotix (32X) and SegaSonic the Hedgehog (Arcade) were games that were expected to be on the collection based upon the obscurity theme. Yuji Naka stated in an interview that SegaSonic was left out due to the original game being controlled by a trackball.[1] However, there is an entire art section of the museum dedicated to Chaotix which suggests Knuckles' Chaotix was originally going to appear in the collection. Some pictures based on Sonic Jam are also in the museum.

So, really, it all comes down to Sonic CD. And the Vectorman games, which are fun if you can get round to unlocking them. Since you can buy this for less than twenty quid if you shop around, it's a nice way to experience a game sadly marginalised on the stillborn Mega Drive CD-ROM add-on, and it's also pleasantly rebellious in the current climate of 3D gang warfare action games with 80 billion polygons. In other words, if this sort of thing matters to you, if you still can't bear to unplug your Dreamcast, and you do own Virtua Fighter 4 and all the others and think they're brilliant, this is for you. If you're dying for another 2D Sonic game, it might be for you too. But if you genuinely want a collection, perhaps a MEGA collection, of several 2D Sonic games, and you can't really imagine spending an evening using your WaveBird as a sort of prosthetic syringe to draw the blue blood out of all the minced royalty, go for Sonic Mega Collection instead. It's much better.

On a related note, is there anywhere I can listen to the Japanese SonicCD soundtrack? The one in gems has it's moments, but doesn't seem to follow the action that well. The music for invincible Sonic is great mind.

This compilation is definantly more aimed at the Sonic fan than the average gamer. Where as Mega Collection contained the original Sonic Adventures, Gems Collection has no way near the depth that Mega Collection has. It does not include nearly as many games and unfortunately over half of the games are Game Gear ones. The three big games are good fun, especially Sonic CD, perhaps the best Sonic adventure of them all. I do believe that Sega could have done a little more to this collection to make it a worthy purchase, a little more extras like the previous compilation should have been included and perhaps a little more games with depth, as all the Game Gear games are incredibly short. At the moment you can pick up Sonic Gems Collection for 15.99, if you are a big Sonic fan then there is no doubt you will pick this up, if you are looking to play Sonic for the first time then I would recommend Sonic Mega Collection +, a game with more depth and more enjoyment.

Unlike Sonic Mega Collection, where the flagship titles shared much in common, Sonic Gems collection is a grab-bag of games widely varying in gameplay and quality. Writing one review for this collection is impractical and unfair, so instead I present a parade of mini-reviews:

Even with some setbacks, Sonic CD's interesting level variations, excellent soundtrack, and a solid time attack mode make it an excellent addition to a Sonic fan's collection. Revisiting this game was a pleasure.

All-in-all, Sonic Gems is a collection of leftovers, and it really shows. Mario may have an absurd number of spin-off games, but Sonic apparently has an absurd number of bad spin-offs that scream "me too!" Sonic CD is great, but one good console game and a handful of decent handheld games available elsewhere cannot keep this compilation above water.

Sonic CD: Running the game works now, but exiting out of the game will cause Dolphin to close with no error message. It will close after saving the "Setting Data" (afterwards the screen fades to try and return to the game selection menu).
Sonic R: Game runs and exits fine, weird.
Sonic the Fighters: Game doesn't load at all. Hangs, but might be due to unemulated opcodes (?) or something. The PS2 version of this collection has some problems with the game as well.

Shadow The HedgehogTM, will be appearing in his own computer game for the first time on the PlayStation2, Xbox and Gamecube on 25th November. Hero or Villain? You decide...! Sonic fans will not be disappointed this Christmas, with Sonic Rush providing unique high-speed platform action on the Nintendo DS also out 25th November. Retro gamers can indulge their passion with two new collections of classic old school games, Sonic Gems CollectionTM (30th Sept) and SEGA Classics Collection (28th Oct).
