The Fray 2002年在丹佛成军，两名核心成员Isaac Slade (吉他,钢琴) 和 Joe King (吉他,主唱)是曾经的校友，没有想到数年后一次在唱片行的相遇成了两人后来组建乐队的契机，意气相投似乎是众多乐队组成的缘分，The Fray也不免俗。Slade和King不久便开始了两人搭档的小型磨合性质的演出，并逐渐摸索形成了自己的风格，既有U2般激扬上进气质又不乏Cunting Crows根源性的摇滚本质，随着Slade两名前队友鼓手Ben Wysocki和吉他手Dave Welsh的加入，The Fray成型了，频繁在丹佛的演出也为乐队打响了一定的知名度，他们流行的曲调迅速风靡，第一张的Demo更是成了当地电台的热播曲，乐队还被丹佛的Westword Magazine评为最佳新进乐队。2004年乐队签约Epic Records，处女大碟《How to Save a Life》于2005年9月出版发行。

虽然03年的Demo《Reason》反响并不够广泛，但这张<How to save a life>实力绝对不容小觑！收录单曲<Over my head>曾经闯进美国Billboard前十位置，而主打单曲<How to save a life>也被美国ABC电视台的大热剧集<Grey's Anatomy>(实习医生格蕾）收录至OST中，足见The Fray过人功底！
