Hi All -

Kindles, Fires or Nooks... and tablet reading devices.

Do your schools or libraries allow these devices or is there a policy around them? The Internet connectivity is an obvious issue.

Many Thanks! I miss seeing you in person.

We are a K-8 school. We allow E-ink Kindles, and we have some  Paperwhites that the library checks out to students. If they bring in their own, they usually have the book already downloaded. Occasionally, we connect their Kindle to the network so they can get a book, but then we have the device forget the network immediately. This doesn't come up much because usually they don't know their family's Amazon account information. We put content on the school-owned devices ourselves by borrowing content from the students' Sora accounts on their behalf.

Good morning Robert,

When you say allow, do you mean allow them to be used for School owned/managed content? Or just allowed in the attach to the network sense?

We don't actively restrict Kindle use, but we also only distribute e-books via Sora, which requires a whole sharing process to read on a kindle. I don't see a lot of Kindle products in the building generally.

Network wise, those things use so little data as to be inconsequential. Having extra devices using space on your ARP tables may be  of concern if you're talking about 500 kindles, but otherwise, shouldn't pose a real problem for your network. Just keep personal devices separated from school devices and you're set.

Thanks,
