Hello,
I am looking for some 3D printing project ideas for 3rd-5th grade students using Tinkercad or a comparable program. I find that 3D design is the hardest thing to teach students this young and need some help.
Thanks in advance,
Kyle Anderson

1. Making additional LEGO pieces or making attachments for LEGO figurines (things they can hold in their hands or new head toppers for the bodies)
2. Stamps (which also teaching how to reverse designs) to press into an ink pad or clay
3. Chess and other game pieces
4. Mini models of structures or buildings

Hi Kyle!

My grade 3 & 4 students use Tinkercad to make friendship necklaces/keychains, snowflakes, bubble wands, desk pets, miniatures for snow globes, mazes, boxes with lids, tic-tac-toe boards and fidget clickers. Let me know if you are interested in the resources for any of these projects.

I also use Tinkercad with 4th grade and they have been successful with it. It does require us to make some tweaks to their work, but I'm always impressed with their resilience with the tool.

I have a big 2nd grade NYC Landmark project we use tinkercad for, which I’m happy to share more about if anyone is interested :)

Hello all,
I just joined the group. I'm the technology integrator at Saddle River Day and teach PreK - 7th grade.

I've been 3D printing for over a decade with elementary students. I've had them draw ecosystems, design robots, and print an artifact for their social studies project. I also support students who need to print elements for their capstone project and robotics team.
I start with a keychain, have them use a basic shape and add their name to it either on top or as a hole. Then I have them do a simple house. This allows them to group objects and create holes for windows and doors. With these skills in place they can design just about anything that aligns with their science and social studies curriculum.
Please reach out if you would like to talk 3D printing!

Hi all -

My good friend and colleague from our partner High School has an amazing and informational youtube channel for 3-D Printers and gives amazing ideas, step by step tutorials on how to print and design things.

Students love how creative and passionate he is - and yes he is as nice in person as he is on the videos.

Check out his channel (and subscribe if you like)

I start 3D design with 1st grade at my school and my first project is as a class we make a skyline. Each kid thinks about the simple shapes that can be combined to make a building. They then each design their own skyscraper. Some kids have a tall rectangle, some make something that looks like the empire state building. I highly recommend this project as it can easily be differentiated for each kid's computer ability.

Other projects I do include, making key chains, lanterns for lunar new year, chess pieces, designing wheels for rubber band cars, fidgets, backpack tags, battle tops (very popular), flowers that can be attached to dowels, snowglobes, bubble wands, etc

So many great projects!
I use Tinkercad in 1st grade to design counters for math, just the scribble tool. In 2nd grade we learn how to place, move, and tilt. We design Lenape homes and communities as an integrated social studies unit. In 3rd grade we design identity name plates where they learn how to hole and group things. In 4th grade it’s a little more free- my kids do a “design a business unit” and we use Tinkercad to design and print prototypes.

Please keep the ideas coming :)
