Good Morning!

Has anyone had any experience using KIBO with Pre-K, Jr. K, or Kindergarten-aged students? Or other EdTech tools for young learners to begin understanding sequencing (order) and trial and error (debugging)? Thanks for your time.

Happy Wednesday!

Katty

I’ve been using Kobi robotics with K for a number of years. I love that you don’t need a device. The students love them!

Hi Katty,

I used to use KIBO but had some issues with it.
  • If I remember correctly those old KIBOs didn't have a clearly defined on-off button.
  • They were very expensive.
That said they taught conditions well without a device. My students loved them.
A long time ago I wrote a piece for the KIBO website about having Third Graders teach kindergarteners about KIBO

I am thinking maybe I should pull those KIBOs out again.

Best,

Judith

All the best,
Judith

Thank you all! We already have a set of BeeBots that I use in K-1 but I'm worried the buttons are too small for our Pre-K and Jr. K friends.

All of your feedback is so appreciated!

I found that the scanning of the commands with KIBO was too hard for the K's. Bringing in the Third Graders to work with them really helped.

Both Codepillar and Scratch Jr (on iPad) have worked for me in Kindergarten.

Hi Katty,

When I used KIBO with PreK the issue was scanning the blocks to input the code into the robot, which always required a teacher's help. This was several years ago so they may have improved the functionality.

Overall, I found Cubetto and BeeBots to be much more effective to use with PreK students.

This year we found Kaibot. It like Kibo, but smaller. Here is a video of the kids using it. There is an app for ipads available, but we have only used the coding cards. This is 2nd grade, we’ve used it in 1st and 3rd graders loved it too. They have an advanced card set as well. The company is from New Zealand.

A suggestion for using Kibo -

Working in a brightly lit room, the Kibos are not consistent in scanning the bar codes on the blocks with their red laser light, resulting in much frustration for the kids. My solution was to create a Kibo "scanning station" under a table, where it was a little darker. As shown in the attached photo, the kids place the Kibo between two pieces of tape on the floor facing a piece of construction paper taped to a table leg. All they have to do is hold the block up in front of the paper and it will scan every time. When they are finished programming they leave the station with their robot and test out their program, allowing others to use the scanning station. My Pre-K kids loved it (kids love getting under tables, right?).
