Certain types of hearings are not reported by a court reporter, but rather with an electronic recording device. These hearings include traffic and certain misdemeanor calendars. Small claims hearings are not reported.

Generally, the court will not provide court reporters for the following types of proceedings: case management and status conferences; ex parte applications or hearings; orders to show cause; infractions and small claims. Court reporters may be used in such proceedings at the requesting parties' expense.

There are two kinds of court records that reflect the actions taken in a particular case. The first is the court docket, also known as the register of actions. The register of actions is continually updated to reflect the parties and attorneys involved, new filed documents, appearance dates, and the actions that were taken in court hearings or alternative dispute resolution proceedings. Copies of the register of actions can be requested from the Court Records department for $0.50 per page.

The second kind of court record is a transcript of court proceedings. Transcripts are verbatim records of everything said by the judge, attorneys, witnesses and others during a court hearing or trial. Court reporters are responsible for preparing transcripts of hearings as required by law or upon request. Except for those transcripts prepared for the court for certain criminal matters, all other parties requesting transcripts are required to pay reporters for preparation of transcripts at the rate prescribed by law. The rates that reporters may charge for transcripts, as well as other information about reporter transcripts, are contained in the Government Code, starting at section 69950. Requirements for the format of transcripts are set forth in California Rule of Court section 8.144.

If the name of the court reporter is not listed above, contact the Court Reporter Coordinator by email or by phone (415) 444-7060 for assistance. Transcripts from non-staff court reporters may be requested by writing to the court Reporter Coordinator. The Coordinator will forward the request to the pro tem reporter. Please provide the following information:

Infractions, limited jurisdiction civil and certain misdemeanor hearings may be electronically recorded. An audio CD or a written transcript of the electronic recording may be available from the court.

To get a written transcript of an electronically recorded hearing, please submit your request to eScribers at =MC. You will be requested to fill out an online transcript order form. eScribers will contact the court to obtain the electronic recording and will prepare the transcript for you.

The duty of the Official Court Reporters Office is to record certain court proceedings verbatim either through the taking of stenographic notes or by an electronic recording system approved by the Illinois Supreme Court. The Office ensures that all transcripts prepared as the official record of court proceedings are prepared pursuant to applicable Illinois Supreme Court rules.

The Office of Official Court Reporters employs 172 court reporters and 20 digital recording court specialists.

*Copy rates apply when a copy of a transcript is ordered within seven (7) days of the original transcript being produced. If a transcript is ordered after seven days of the original being produced, original transcript rates apply.

* Copies for indigent defendants are provided free of charge (included in the $4.00 page rate). The same transcript required to be filed later for subsequent appeal(s) may be charged at the copy rate.

Any nurse working with children and/or dependent adults is a mandatory reporter. It is important to note that "working with" does not always mean hands on nursing care." This may mean observation or treatment of a child or dependent adult. Nurses providing care to dependent adults or children in Iowa must take a mandatory reporter course.

Transcripts produced by an official reporter pro tempore will be treated, for court purposes, identically with transcripts prepared by official reporters. Reporting notes of an official reporter pro tempore are official records of the Court., per Government Code Section 69955(a). The notes of official reporters pro tempore, when transcribed and certified, are prima facie evidence of the testimony and proceedings, per Code of Civil Procedure Section 273(a).

Maine law requires that certain people report immediately to Adult Protective Services when the person knows or has reasonable cause to suspect that an incapacitated or dependent adult has been or is likely to be abused, neglected, or exploited.

A supervisor or administrator of a person mandated to report to APS may not impede or inhibit the reporting, and a person making a good faith report may not be subject to any sanction for making a report.

A transcript of court proceedings is a verbatim record of everything said by the judge, attorneys, witnesses and others during a court hearing or trial. If a hearing or trial was reported by a court reporter, that court reporter is responsible for preparing a transcript of the hearing as required by law or upon request. Except for those transcripts prepared for the court for certain criminal matters, all other parties requesting transcripts are required to pay reporters for the preparation of transcripts at the rate prescribed by law.

The Court is now electronically recording certain court proceedings. For electronically recorded proceedings, you will see a + sign in the court file where you would normally see the initials of a court reporter. Requests for CDs of electronically recorded proceedings must be submitted in writing and will require two business days to process. Requests cannot be submitted over the phone. You may request copies by mail or in person at the Archived Records office during business hours.

The Court is not required to provide a court reporter in the above case types. However, a court reporter may have been present at one or more hearings in some of these case types. If a court reporter was present and you would like to request a transcript you will need to contact the court reporter or their agency directly.

If you do not know the name of the court reporter, please contact the appropriate division of the Court to request that information. An alternative is to get their business address from the Department of Consumer Affairs Court Reporters Board of California website. Click on License Verification and enter the name of the court reporter.

Please note: The court is not obligated to provide transcripts free of charge to a party who has been granted a fee waiver. (See Jameson v. Desta (2018) 5 Cal.5th 594, 623-625). Assistance may be available through the Transcript Reimbursement Fund.

If the services of an official court reporter are not available for a hearing in a civil, family or probate case, a party may, by stipulation, arrange for the appointment of a privately retained certified shorthand reporter. In these cases, it is the party's responsibility to pay the reporter's fee for the attendance at the proceeding.

Effective September 1st, 2023, an Official Court Reporter or Official Court Reporter Pro Tempore of the Sonoma County Superior Court shall deliver a transcript in electronic form as specified in Code of Civil Procedure section 271.
