Spokane is doing several of the things in this story by bike planner Mia Birk, and can learn from other items.

Of particular note:

"Trails should take priority whenever possible. Develop a future trail usage demand projection based on comparable trails throughout the nation. (Alta can help you with this.) And never stop the trail for a private driveway. Be confident that motorists will adapt!"

"Public works departments often shy away from education and outreach, thinking that it’s “social engineering.” But, as I talked about in the Joyride section “Plant Seeds and a Garden Will Grow,” once you build it, people will come. But if we build it, and then encourage people to use it, in ways that are meaningful to their lives, they will come in flocks, droves, maybe even stampedes. The most successful cities embrace this role as critical to success, and they do it constantly and thoroughly as part and parcel of the way they do business. "

Mia said several years ago she would be happy to come to Spokane. Maybe a reading from her new book would be a good draw.

Best regards,

Richard Rush was communicating with her a while back and she's definitely willing to come. It requires identification of sponsors to pick up the speaking fee and other arrangements, so if you have sponsor ideas and want to work on this, get in touch with Richard.

It would be awesome to have her come!

Some good news is that the city is (finally) going to take out the trail stops at private driveways on the Fish Lake Trail. It will be a yield for trail users and stop for driveway users.
