City staff have asked us to review a few segments of the Master Bike
Plan for possible revision. We need your help to get these segments
ridden and evaluated (using our criteria worksheet) in time for our
next meeting on June 21st.

If you can help, please email me and I'll get you set up with the
information you need.

Hi,
I could ride segments that are NW or West Central.

Matt,

Be on the watch for an invitation to join dropbox. That's where you'll find the information. I'm certain (though we never want to trust my memory) that there are some routes that we need to look at in the areas you describe.

There's less than a week left until the next BAB meeting. If you're
helping evaluate MBP routes, please remember to sign up for your
segments, and add your comments before Tuesday.

We're grateful for your help, we can't get all of these done by
ourselves, thank you!

Rachel, Bradley,
Here is my evaluation of the Indiana & NW Blvd route.  I'm still a bit foggy on how you want this posted, so I'll put my narrative in the body of this email and also attach at a Word document.
Eileen Hyatt

Project Area:   Indiana Ave (Howard to Monroe, connecting to  Northwest Blvd.) 1.9 miles
Northwest Blvd (Monroe to Audubon)

Altogether I would rate the area as a “HIGH” challenge for creating a bicycle friendly lane environment except for a needed bike lane system on the south side of Audubon Park.

Indiana Ave is already less usable for bicyclists than Maxwell (or Boone.)  I would suggest making these streets more bike friendly.  Maxwell with bike lanes and a left turn lane would work well for motorists and bicyclists.

The most beneficial and usable section of Northwest Blvd for bicyclists would be from Belt to Audubon Park,  as that area would complete the shortest bike route from downtown Spokane, Maxwell Ave,  and Belt Street.  Reconfiguration of right of way that is now taken with wide sidewalks,  planting areas, and lane widths could make bike lanes feasible.  Because of heavy traffic and many turn lanes, the area would be attractive to experienced, well-trained bike commuters looking for the most efficient way to the neighborhoods near Audubon Park.

I would strongly suggest that a WELL SIGNED alternative route is needed into northwest  Spokane.  I suggest using collector arterials and residential streets as Bike Boulevards.
One example that works is: Howard Street north to Montgomery.  Montgomery west across Monroe at a traffic light to Madison, north on Madison to Cleveland,  (Madison is also a good street to convert as a Bike Boulevard to the north connecting with Cora, Courtland and Cedar) west on Cleveland (jog at Cedar, continue West on Cleveland),  north on Nettleton, west on Dalton to Milton.   Milton will give access to Northwest Blvd, and also to Driscoll Blvd bike route.  There are bike lanes needed in alongside Audubon Park, with the reduction of one auto lane eastbound.   With bike lanes on both sides of NW Blvd alongside Audubon Park,  and the left turn lane available,  this route above would be a good alternative to the busy Northwest Blvd &  Indiana eastbound and into downtown  Spokane.  Clear, visible, complete signing is necessary.

Eileen Hyatt

off this topic, but why are there NO bike symbols in the bike lanes on S. Cedar/High Drive with only TINY little signs indicating that there is a bike lane/parking lane?
(there is actually ONE bike symbol in the northbound lane @ 29th ave though the lane continues north to 8th avenue)

I have an answer, though it may not be the answer. I think the city did the job on the cheap, and the stencils cost about $600 each. The same is true along Hatch near Manito CC. New signs indicating a bike lane, but no stencils, no "no parking," nothing that might make it a hassle for anyone within the city, nothing to initiate phone calls, largely because only drivers complain, nothing that will cost any more than can be gotten away with. Cyclists, generally, just end up being thankful for the crumbs that come our way.
