Lesbian Ex-East Bay high school coach admits to having sex with students, avoids prison

MARTINEZ -- A former high school girls basketball coach charged with two
felonies after she admitted to having sex with students has taken a plea
deal and will avoid prison, court documents show.

Catherine Handlin, 24, a former junior varsity girls basketball coach at
Berean Christian High School in Walnut Creek, was convicted of unlawful
intercourse with a minor, a misdemeanor, and sentenced to 60 days in jail
and three years probation. She was originally charged with sex with a
minor and oral copulation with a minor, both felonies, but her conviction
on a lesser charge means she will avoid having to register as a sex
offender when she's released.

Interestingly, both prosecutors and Handlin's attorney agreed that the
former coach expressed a great deal of remorse, and took responsibility
for her actions.

"It was a terrible mistake that she acknowledged immediately," said deputy
District Attorney Aron DeFerrari, who prosecuted the case. "She wanted to
immediately rectify the wrongs she had done. That factored tremendously in
her being able to plead out to a misdemeanor."

Handlin's attorney, Dan O'Malley, said his client "lives every day with
great remorse and guilt," and is trying to recover mentally.

"She's sad that her life ambition to coach girls' basketball will be
forbidden," he said. "Although this was an isolated event, she's taking
every precaution to make sure nothing like this ever happens again."

Police started investigating Handlin after an anonymous tipster reported
to Berean Christian officials that Handlin had engaged in inappropriate
behavior with two students, aged 17 and 18. She was fired from her
coaching job once school officials verified the allegations, and confessed
to authorities, police said. Authorities only filed charges in connection
with the 17-year-old student.

Berean Christian administrators notified parents of the allegations
immediately, and authorities are confident that no other victims are out
there.
