Leopold's Music on Durant in Berkeley closed suddenly
this past weekend, after being in business
for 28 years. Does anyone know what happened?
Are they truly closed?

Hopefully. It wasn't really Leopold's, just a front for the Wherehouse,
who bought out the old Leopold's. I don't know anyone who's shopped there
since the buy-out.

Too bad, I have fond memories of going there as a teenager. But it
really was closer to the Wherehouse than the store I remember as a
teenager. Of course they really made their mark with R&B music.
Funny thing is that up to this day they had a very good collection of
Celtic music on CD. About a year ago I got the impression that the
store had previously been well stocked and the CD's that hadn't sold
were still there in the bins. I picked up several hard-to-find Celtic
titles at that time. But they had not been stocking new stuff like
Martin Hayes and there was few used CD's in the bins. Oh well.

They are truly closed. My guess is that it is related to the
Wherehouse (?) bankruptcy. One of those large chains anyway.
Leopold's was owned by Wherehouse (or whoever it was) and they entered
bankruptcy proceedings a few months back.

Yes, I think they are, at least if you can believe the story aired on
KTVU. The explanation they gave is that the store had just lost a lot
of money since it was bought out by the Wherehouse chain.

It's a real shame, of course. But I've never seen anyplace like the
Telegraph/Durant area when it comes to competition for a music store.
Think about it--within a couple of blocks, you had Rasputin's, Tower,
Leopold's and Amoeba. It's surprising any of them last....

That's what made Berkeley so cool. I was a Marin County disk jockey
dating a Berkeley college woman in the mid '70s and she would kick me out
of her house to get some studying done and I would roam around Berkeley in
my half-broken down VW bug in search of used records. Poor students
equals a great selection of used records and I was out looking for good
deals.

Since I'm one of the victims of the Leopold closing, I think I can give
you the story. Let's hope the Wherehouse doesn't decide to take away my
severence package after I write this.
Wherehouse bought Leopold Records about 10 years ago when Record Factory
went under, (Record Factory owned the store for a few years before
Wherehouse). For the most part the Wherehouse tried to keep their hands
off Leopold. But as time wore on they kept introducing their systems,
till it got to be almost impossible for Leopold to maintain its
reputation. Wherehouse will have you believe it did everything possible
to save Leopold. In fact the Wherehouse destroyed the store. Any
suggestions that were given them by myself and the manager of the store
were never taken seriously. Its a sad day for Berkeley and the Bay Area.
