The American Cancer Society is having a Prostate Cancer Information
Exchange at Cole Hall, UCSF on Saturday, September 25th. There will be
an update about the latest prostate cancer research and treatment
options. Most importantly, it will be an opportunity to meet others who
are fighting and surviving. I know there are other gay men who are
dealing with this disease. It would be great to meet some and share our
experience.

Please e-mail me for more information.

Do you know (or does anyone know) the prostate cancer rate among gay men
versus the general population?

The popular thinking is that getting regular prostate massage (by whatever
means) was supposed to be instrumental in the apparently lower than
average amount of prostate enlargement problems in gay men. The popular
thinking seemed to be that an enlarged prostate was a precursor to
prostate cancer. Ergo, gay men supposedly have a lower incidence of
prostate cancer than the general population.

Are any statements in the above paragraph true?

I don't know of any studies on gay/non-gay rates of prostrate cancer. I
have a couple of out-of-town gay friends who have had prostate surgery.
I have been in a support group - all straight guys - and although they
have been pretty open and very accepting - a lot of the group
discussions deal with sexuality. I think it would great if I could find
an all gay group and hope to make some connections at the conference.

Meanwhile, guys over 50 - get your PSA test every year; that's how I
found out I had cancer.

I have just found this old link and will attempt to make contact even though it is probably outdated.

Can anyone please tell me if there is a group that specifically targets the problems associated with gay prostate cancer survivors? Are there social sites where people cd meet online or in person where one might meet people that have experienced similar problems and issues that affect many of us? I haven't been able to find any.
