And the finalist in the "Biggest Dork of the Year" competition is...

ME!

I've just discovered that I've lost my spare (and only) key for my 95 BMW
R1100RS.

According to SJ BMW, no one has the ability to cut a key from a VIN no. That
strikes me as really strange...they say it has to come from Germany.

Has anyone been able to solve this problem locally?

Do you happen to have matching System cases for it ... and is one of
them unlocked? You could remove the lock from the case and use the
tumbler pattern to determine what the key should be.

I got four keys with my GS. Maybe it's time to order a whole set?

I'm not familiar with Beemers, but on my (Japanese) bikes there is a number
on the key cylinder face plate which is sufficient info for a dealer to cut
a key.

I have the cases, but they're on the bike, securely locked.

When I lost my original key and started using the spare, I decided to order a
new one before I needed it--One Of These Days.

I would have thought so--especially with a higher-end bike like the BMW.

I bought it at Bavarian Motor Works in SF; I'm hoping that their successor has a
spare for it. When I called, I was told everyone was at the races. I'll call
on Monday and see what they say.

The dealership ought to have your key number filed away.  Ask them for a replacement key.  If not, check your manuals.  If you're still covered by BMW's roadside assistance, they can make you a key.

Joe:

I can't cut a key from the VIN number but I can cut a key from the key code
because I specialize in motorcycles. Most locksmiths don't have the codes and
therefore won't be able to cut it. I can also make a key if I have access to
the motorcycle. The ignition lock has 8 tumblers and all the other locks have
6 tumblers so taking one of those locks to a locksmith will only result in a
key that will operate all the locks except for the ignition. Feel free to
email me or visit my web site if you need help.

Thanks Eric. That 1995 Triumph Tiger you used to have made a fine addition to
my motorcycle locksmithing manual that is on my web page.

ATTENTION: I am in need of motorcycles (especially 1995+ Kawasaki - all
models) to do a photo article on for The National Locksmith magazine and/or my
next manual. I can drive my service van anywhere in the greater San Francisco
Bay Area. It usually involves removing one or more locks while taking photos
of the procedure. If you have lost the key to your bike, want it rekeyed so it
uses a different key, or just want duplicates, this is a good opportunity
because it is free; all I want is the photos. I guarantee not to damage your
bike. Email me at Auto...@aol.com if you are interested.
