I have a friend who works in our office in Alameda and would like to have
a local number to call for internet access during the day. If anyone
knows of anything local to Alameda, please email me.

Thanks!

Netcom Communications has a POP in Alameda at 865-9004. Sign-on as guest
to register. The price can't be beat at $19.50 per month.

Gentlemen, gentlemen. It sounds like you are comparing apples and
oranges: yes, lower-cost UUCP-based mail/news access is available, but
(1) you don't get Internet access, and (2) you might have to pay
long-distance telco charges since there is no local POP (the original
poster specified Alameda). At Netcom one gets Internet access and
there is an Alameda POP. For $19.50/mo, that probably "can't be
beat". (I thought Portal was a flat $10, but I don't know if that is
still true, or if you get direct Internet access.)

Personally, if I needed a personal non-employer-based Net account, I
would really want Internet access and $20/month flat rate, including
telecom, is a super deal, and Netcom seems to have the best deal for
that. If, on the other hand, I was satisfied with reliable UUCP-based
mail/news service, plus whatever else is offered on a fre or low-cost
site, that "can't be beat", either. Everything I have heard about
Scott's site (zorch) has been favorable, and he is a very
knowledgeable and concerned system operator. But it's definitely a
case of apples vs. oranges.

In general, this is wrong. A variety of smaller sites provide free access,
usually at arbitrarily low service levels. For folks near to San Jose, Zorch
provides email/Usenet service (no Internet [IP] connectivity) for about half
of netcom's price, with significant (15%) prepayment discounts. If you don't
need telnet/ftp, if for instance you are looking for an alternate email address
for non-work-related mail, you can save quite a bit of money over netcom's
prices.

Zorch's contact information is in my .signature. I obviously possess a
significant commercial interest in the above material.

Scott,

I don't know what you mean when you say 'this is wrong'. I have a Netcom
account. The Alameda phone number was given to me by bobr. Through it,
I have FTP/Telnet and Usenet access. The price is only $19.50 a month.
That's a flat rate regardless of how long I stay on. Whose phone it is
I don't know. What's killing me are the phone calls from Concord to
Alameda. I've had phone bills up to $192 a month. A POP in the Concord/
Walnut area would save me some grocery money. There is a local public
access system available to read whatever newsgroups I want, but I like
having FTP capability. I use it a lot.

I'm not denying any of the numbers you quoted. I am flatly denying your

assertion, from <kxkkyk...@netcom.com> that the price "can't be beat."
It obviously can.

Michael,
You're right. Now that I know to what Scott was referring, I agree.
I was referring to the full service (telnet, ftp, usenet, etc.) I
receive from Netcom. The T1 line makes it even better. I want one
for Christmas. Santa: are you listening? :-{)
