Is Google Docs open source? I've never seen any references to freely
available code anywhere.

I see nothing wrong with Microsoft Office. Jeez, people always want things
for free, and then they have to chase down versions that aren't going to
skunk up their computer. I have a copy of MS Office 2002 which works just
fine. I use PowerPoint when I want to design graphics (it's great for
building logos), FrontPage when I want to do web pages, Word, and Excel. I
don't use Access but I use the Access engine with software I design myself.

With .xlsx and .docx files?

Nothing wrong with MS Office. I posted alternatives. Some people may
be adding a computer and don't want to buy a new version especially if
you are like me and only use it once every few weeks. You might also
have issues running under newer versions of Windows.

I have seven Windows machines here of various ages and I think $100 each
for Office is a bit much. LibreOffice works for everything I need

Actually, yes. Microsoft issued a patch that allows Word and Excel to use
these kinds of files.

I use Open Office. Only the other day did someone request a document in
Word format. Open Office can export in 3 different Word formats but I
send PDF's to everyone else.

Word is a hack and verified as such by former Microsoft employees I know
and even in one book by a former Microsoft employee. It is a "bottom
up" design where their engineers would create a function then give it to
the project manager and tell them to add it. For contrast Excel was
actually designed.

Because Windows is like building an airliner by adding things to an old
biplane I avoid wherever I can even though I have a Windows 7 64-bit 4
core machine for video editing and graphics. My main machine that I'm
typing this on is Linux.
