I was at someone's house in Hayward yesterday for a party, and I was
helping out in the kitchen. In the freezer they had about fifty foil
wrapped squares, and I asked what they were. They said that they were
"fig squares" that they get them shipped from Rhode Island, and that
there is no such thing available anywhere else. They said that they do
not offer them to any guests at any parties, and that it's something
they never share, except if they have a guest from Rhode Island.

Has anyone ever seen these in the Bay Area?

I've never heard of them before, but it seems a little strange,
given that figs grow *here*.

Couldn't be any stranger than coffee. People are always talking about
the great coffee from some place or another. But coffee never grows in
any of those places!

Brits love to make their own marmelade from Spanish oranges from
Seville. Here's a home ingredient kit:

The fig squares themselves sound like a variation on kolacky, a swatch
of preserves in pastry. (Diacritical marks omitted.)

Or <provocateur mode>: the whold story sounds fishy. Why wasn't SMS
offered one of them? Or even been given a peak at one, temporarily
unwrapped? This all sounds like misdirection to hide something illicit
going on in that freezer....

No, but I can guess. If it has a shortbread crust and fig jam type
topping, they are aka London Bars. Think lemon bar/square with a fig
topping. Try substituting fig jam for raspberry in this recipe.

They did let me see one, just not eat one.

Good try, but no. At least wikipedia thinks she was born in SF. But
that's almost the same thing, right?

Probably cleverly disguised, then.

I grew up in RI, and at first I thought I never heard of it. But now, I
wonder if we didn't get a dessert like that occasionally with school
lunches. If so, it's not worth any effort to get.

Wow, I know this is an old post but the comments are way off base. Fig Sqaures are common in New England and more like a thick fig jam inside a pie crust or pastry, not the consistency of a typical fruit bar. ...and YES, they ARE worth buying, shipping and keeping them hidden for yourself. Ha, ha. Signed: former New Englander now living in the South where they have nothing like this (but they do grow figs here)

Never mind. Google was much more helpful this time around.

I'm pretty sure we'll never hear from you again, but in the off chance
you're still reading ba.food... thanks for the recipe!

I get them in Riverside when I am up home. There is nothing like them anywhere. Paris runs a close second but still not the same!

Nothing like NE fig squares from the YumYum shop or Market Basket (Demoulas). Love them and I have found none in VA or FL. I'd freeze them too, but I would share with closest friends.
