Does anyone know of a good place to buy tamarind paste? I've been told
that I can find it at 99 Ranch 99 (I never knew if the "99" came before
or after the "Ranch")... but I scoured every aisle of the Cupertino
store to no avail.

Thanks!

You can try Marina Food also, over at DeAnza and Stevens Creek (close to
Target). I know there there is a tamarind juice (I know you asked for paste
but I've never used paste before) under the brand Pantainorasingh (Thai
brand) which I have bought from Ranch 99 (I know it is the other way but I
say it this way anyway). It's in one of two aisles.. the one with coconut
milk near the freezers with ice cream, or else another one I don't remember
(sorry).

I used the juice to make Kaeng Som. (sour soup)

I think they have it at 99. It comes in a white plastic jar with red lid.
I have seen it labeled 'sour soup concentrate' or 'fruit paste'. They all
have tamarind picture on the label. Check the home page of my website for
the picture of the tamrind: www.ThaiTable.com .

Any Thai grocery store should have it... you don't say where you're located.
Comes dried, you dissolve in a bit of water to use it.

I've seen it in the middle eastern (?) store that's near Harry's
Hofbrau, in the same parking lot with Garden City (Saratoga Avenue just
off of 280).

I bought some recently from the Indian grocery store that is next to K-Mart
on El Camino (near Lawrence) in Santa Clara. It comes in a glass jar, you
mix some water with the paste to use it. I just asked someone at the counter
and they showed me where it was.

I saw some raw tamrind in Country Produce (Wolfe and Reed Ave) in
Sunnyvale.
And if you like to eat tamrind, try their tamrind candies,
Its sour and sweet.
Became a star among ladies in a party for disturbuting them ;-)

Or there's the Spice House in the Bank Of Santa Clara space in
the Safeway Mall @ Old San Francisco & Wolfe in Sunnydale ..er
vale. Its way down at the end in the arm that runs along
Old S.F. Rd. Last time I was in there they had Tamarind Paste.
There's another Indian Grocery in Sunnyvale on South Murphy
in the same "mall" that has the McWhorter's facing ECR.
