Living according to the seasons as I do, I bought a corned beef from
Nob Hill, labelled "Black Angus, proudly distributed by Raley's." It
was a buck a pound more expensive than their alternate "The Real
McCoy," but big spender that I am, I threw caution to the winds and
paid the extra $3.

The package's dot matrix Sell By line contained "Est. 1152," so I
looked it up. USDA Establishment 1152 is the Mohawk Packing Co. on Old
Bayshore in San Jose, not far from the Brokaw Fry's, Bay 101, and
other SV landmarks.

Mohawk sells corned beef under "The Real McCoy" and "Shenson's"
trademarks. As I recall, Shenson's dominates the rest of the
supermarket trade in the BA.

Mohawk also makes bacon and ham, under a third trademark.

The above information is all well and good, but you didn't mention the most
important aspect, how well did it taste?

I don't find that the same producer is selling to several sellers surprising
at all. However, the actual product that the buyer[Safeway, Lunardi's,
etc.] buys from the producer may be different. I'll bet the Shensen's corned
beef and the Safeway corned beef is produced by the same producer. The
Shensen's is better.

Are you thinking of the Mohawk packing plant, or the stockyard that used to
be out there some place?

Ferrara Meat, at Trimble and Zanker

I remember passing stock semitrailers full of beef on the hoof on my
way to work. No one would rent a new building nearby because of the
stench, so it was offered at a discounted rent to Catholic Charities,
which remains there to this day.

Yup. I used to work for Compression Labs, on Junction, near Zanker.

The packing plant had also been out of place for the orchards and
strawberry fields that had been in that area. A boomer I once worked
with reminisced about shooting pheasants in that part of North San
Jose on his way home from school.

Last night my lovely wife cooked a corned beef she had
picked up at Fresh and Easy. Outstanding. I just hope F&E
manages to stay in business for a while. - Tony

I'm curious. What was the price/lb? For point, mid brisket cut, or beef
round?

Is that the privacy-enabled Google? :)
