Anyone have the scoop on the closure of the Petrini's in Cupertino?
Did the super Safeway do it in?

I think that all the Petrini's are either closing or changing, I
think that I heard that the closing date is 9/15. I have been told
that the one in the Bayhill shopping center (San Bruno) will become
a Molly Stone's, the one on 42nd Ave. (San Mateo) was scheduled to
close on 9/15 but now I hear that it will remain open while changing
ownership (cannot recall what it will become, though).

I don't know the details of why they closed, but I can make a few
guesses. I stopped shopping there years ago, primarily because their
produce selection and quality were horrible for a supposedly upscale
market. Also, the area around the fish counter smelled badly, and
the quality of the meats couldn't touch Cosentino's.

The deli in the store was nice, the pasta place OK (I'm talking about
Sunnyvale here), but assuming that the store is closed, I'm not
surprised.

They charged too much and tried/pretended to be a better store than they
really were, at least in my opinion.

Sigh. So sad to see Petrini's go. Will we be left with nothing
but the mundane chain megastores? We have a L*cky's within walking
distance of our house but I refuse to go there. They spend a fortune
on advertising and now they're trying to gather personal and shopping
habit info on people by promoting that stupid L*cky rewards card.
Oh great, a store you can get good prices at only if you first give them
your name, address, phone number, and a list of everything you buy.

Fortunately, Palladino's Market is also within walking distance
(Woodside Road/San Carlos St.) and always has a butcher on duty who
is courteous and helpful. So the prices are a little higher.
I don't care. I don't want neighborhood markets to become a thing
of the past.

I guess I have trouble understanding the interest in Petrini's. For a number
of years (up to about 3 years ago) they had a store in Redwood City. Maybe
this particular outlet was atypical, but even at first they seemed no better
on average than the "ordinary" (as opposed to "super") Safeway. The meat
seemed of less than high quality, the produce okay but not really top-notch,
and prices a bit higher at Petrini's. About a year before they finally closed,
they cut so far back on their selection that they became close to unusable.
Why would they be missed?

I tried a little experiment. Where they ask for your marital status and
size of family, I wrote I was single and had 8 kids. Wonder what the
marketers will do with that?

I agree with you, Al. In general Petrini's went downhill years ago
and as for the RWC store I could never even believe that it ever
belonged to even the downhill version -- that was the worst one
ever.

Along those lines, I should pay back whoever touted the butcher at
Middlefield and Willow in Menlo Park. I don't eat much meat, but
I've gotten a lot of it there since I found it.

If memory serves me correctly, the first announcement of the demise of
ALL the Petrini outlets mentioned a proposed purchase of at least some
of their locations by the company that owns Nob Hill Foods.

But I don't know if it's a done deal. Or which--if any--locations would
become Nob Hill food stores.

I've been meaning to sign up for the L*cky Reward Card (tm) and then
destroy it immediately. That way, I live in their database but do
not ever ever show up in their data. I hadn't even THOUGHT of putting
extreme data in there as well. Figure I should put a slight variant of
my name, so that when new junk mail starts coming I know whence it came.

I really think that Petrini's has not been as good since the
founder, Frank Petrini (no longer living), sold the chain years
back. I think you would like shopping at Lunardi's which is
reminescent of the Petrini's Markets of days past.

For you, Charleen, the closest one is in Belmont, in the Carlmont
shopping center, Ralston and Alemeda de Las Pulgas.

Let us know how you rate it.
