RedBird is the restaurant that opened it its place. It was
not bad, brewed its own still, had okay food, slightly overpriced,
but it didn't last long. The same week I started work in downtown
San Mateo (May 00) it closed.
The storefront sat vacant for over a year when finally a few
months ago there was evidence of a new occupant taking place.
A month or so ago we noticed it was open and stopped by to
look at the menu. Name KingFish. Cuisine: California with
Nawlings influences. Oyster bar. Pricy but looked good.
About a week and a half ago my company had its launch party and
we reserved the downstairs room at KingFish. Open bar and
hors d'houvers. The food was yummy (blue cheese and walnut on
endive, chicken satay sticks, raw tuna w/mango and something with
smoked salmon).
About 3 dozen of us decide to stay for dinner and order a bunch
of things. I get to try, see and hear reviews of about half of
thirty of so items on their menu. Everything gets thumbs up.
Sweet corn rissotto and KingFish lobster and spicy shellfish
sauce fettucini are fantastic, as is the smoky pork chop.
Halibut and Salmon are both sublime. Smoke salmon flatbread, oysters,
avocado and shrimp cockrtail, and NO.L.A. BBQ shrimp appetizers are all
to die for. I hear good reviews from others about the chicken,
the filet mignon and then short ribs.
For dessert, raves were heard about bignets, lemon shortcake,
mud pie and sorbets.
Last night, my sweetie and I decided to pay it a visit for dinner
(they seat till 10:30pm which is an extra bonus as we don't get
out of class till after 9:30).
We split the NO.L.A. Bbq shrimp appetizer (which comes with
white grits and rosemary reduction which we fought over it was
so good). I had the salmon and he had the halibut. Both were
wonderful. We then split the apple pie which was a bit too much.
Speaking of vodkas, their vodka infusion tasted incredible, it was
a pineapple ginger lychee flavor and they got the balance of those
three exactly right, not one overwhelmed the other two or the
vodka itself. They also mixed an excellent Long Island Iced Tea
and made a killed Margarita.
Total bill was around $90 including tax and tip. A deal, if you
ask me! But next time we'll skip dessert and order an extra
appetizer. :)

Okay, I'm confused. Aren't you the same Aysa who wrote in the
wine'tude thread that you (and I quote) "don't drink alcohol"?
Or is there an impostor out there, sullying your good name in

I generally don't drink. Now. For me that translates to
consuming a total of maybe one or two drinks a year total.
My sweetie drinks lots of different stuff but doesn't generally
post reviews here (which translates to one or two posts a year).
I generally review on behalf of both of us when he provides
me useful feedback. In addition, having spent much of my college
years drinking like a fish, I have a well developed palate for
many liquors (vodka being one of them, or maybe that's genetic
being born in Russia and all[1]). So occassionally I'll taste
something my sweetie reviews highly just to make sure I'm not
misrepresenting the quality of something just on his say-so.
[1] that's why I can tell the cheap from mediocre from good
vodkas in a blind taste test even now.

That seems about right. He doesn't talk much. However, he does say
"Hello!". Or maybe it's "Hi!" In my observation, he's much more
expressive on the dance floor even though I beat him in a dance
contest (heh-heh). Not fair. He had bad music. I had good music.
Sorry.

This is the same restaurant group that owns NOLA'S (Palo Alto), A Tavola,
Milagro, Mistral etc. It seems like their dining room reserves onlyfor two
seatings 6:15 and 8? however you can get served the same menu at the bar
(literally) and at the tables in the bar. This has been my choice the 2nd
and 3rd time i've gone there (all times just since August!!)

the beignets are 'to die for' - best this side of the rockies!!!even the
Mississippi!!

I think you can get food at the bar even a bit later - at least on Fri/Sat
night!

Their house special drinks are great - albeit a little pricey (although
pretty norm for nowadays) $8.

Hope you all can try it soon!

Just not to discourage people -- we haven't needed reservations there
on a Thursday night yet. May be different on Fri/Sat but the place
is pretty huge. I wouldn't expect much of a wait without a res, unless
it really takes off in popularity (or I should say trendiness).
This was Asya. You are talking about some Aysa. Those foreign names
can be confusing.
