Subj: Supper Club
----------------------------------------------------
The Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles had a
supper club called the Coconut Grove.
During my youth, in Guerneville on the Russian River, there was
a small ballroom of the same name.
In Santa Cruz, there's a lovely ballroom at the West end of the
Boardwalk called the Cocoanut Grove that has discontinued bringing in
the major travelling bands.
Thursday, March 9, a Coconut Grove will open at 1415 Van Ness
Avenue (PRospect 6-1616). The ad says:
"In the Grand Tradition of San Francisco's Elegant Past, We
Introduce the Return of the `Supper Club'. [The] Coconut
Grove cordially invites you and your friends to join us
[for] fine dining, dancing and special guests
"Sam Butera and the Wildest"
Well, I called to accept that cordial invitation. The cover charge is
$35 per person with a minimum of $20 for food, $55 per person! When I
asked, I was told the dance floor is "small". When _they_ say small
. . . well! I'll let someone else accept that invitation.

[The following is also from a previously posted post, probably in March.]
The "elegance" of the Coconut Grove seems a bit put on to me but
others might think it genuine.
Saturday night around 1 the week-end band was performing when I
arrived. The place, although not crowded, appeared to have had a busy
night.
This evening, around 1:15, there were few patrons and the place
appeared to have not had a busy night.
The owner affects the appearance of a Mafioso. I have no idea whether
he is. He is reputed to be a "very hard man to do business with".
A beer at the bar, I'm told, is $6.
I made two enquiries about the food to be told it was "OK". The plates
have the CG logo. Fancy!
[Since, newspaper restaurant reviewers have praised the food.]
The personnel are _very_ friendly and make one feel welcome. I hope
the service is up to the prices. On departure, they're very gracious,
each one smiling a warm "thank you".
I'm very familiar with the supper clubs of times past. Wrote a thing
about them a few years ago and am currently being used as a source of
information for an historic supper club tour being put together.
This one does _not_ provide all that those other supper clubs
did. This one is little different from the other joints in town that
have major acts. Well, little different in the entertainment sense;
quite different in the respects of service (I guess), food (I guess),
and certainly price!
I would suggest that you drop in for a drink before risking
$110 plus tax and tip for something that you might not enjoy.

SH}. . . sounds like Coconut Grove is kinda not worth it.
That's for the individual to decide. For me, it's not.
